Thanks all.
I think the S3 looks a little sharper than the Golf, so it would probably win out there.
A remap is easy too not that it would be needed.
I do like the Frs it’s just the cost is putting me off, ideally I’d like to stay closer to 20k, the A45 is also quite expensive.
Depreciation is a consideration but not a deal breaker.
Lots of nice cars around at this price though, that Volvo looks interesting, I think I would rule the Subaru out even though I’ve always liked them.

I also think to a degree the FRS will be better performing in terms of value, you only need to look at past RS models and residuals always do well depending on how long you plan to keep it.

Like others have said it’s a nice position to be in. I should add that having never owned a FRS it is on my list and having test driven one I completely ‘get’ why people who have to have one car choose the Focus as it’s breadth of abilities is incredible.

Keep us posted with what you do!

I always liked the Mk2 and nearly pulled the trigger on one last year but prices were too keen.
That white one linked to looks a bit of a bargain, probably due to the mileage.

I’m considering a change next year and will have around £22k to spend.
To be honest I like all of the above but it needs to be a daily driver and I do value comfort slightly with a turn of speed when needed.
I only have a total 25 mile commute daily, on poor greasy roads in winter.
I love the glorious engine note of the RS3 but the 8P has mixed reviews.
I am a bit of an RS fanboy but not sure I could live with the firm ride.
Which would you choose and why?
The Golf R probably makes the most sense out of the bunch.
the golf is hugely competent but to boring for me

the merc and audi (i have owned both) are great in their own ways, the merc is a far better driver, but they have monumental running costs if you stay in franchise (£1500 for brakes etc. A45 24mpg, RS3 19mpg)

not driven the focus

TBH you cant use the power of these cars on the road and hope to keep your licence, I would now go for a slower but far more involved drivers car that you can use more of the time, the GTi TCR would be something i would like to drive, but that wont impress your mates or win traffic light GPs

or an i30N, in budget

I like the look of the club sport edition 40 but dont think it’s worth the extra over a Gti.

Looks like it's had a front end bump. The drivers' door looks the wrong colour too.

It's got the options, but only a few hundred more takes you into newer cars, lower mileage cars from a main dealer. A good bit more protection buying from a dealer.

Somehow I'm not convinced with the list of upgrades and modifications that car was used for school runs and motorway trips by the wife. laugh

At least it's got a new engine and the seat replaced.
