Currently Looking for a little convertible with electric hard top. MX5's and Z4's both look very appealing in this price bracket.

Massive power is not really required so i would probably not be looking for anything with more than 150-180 bhp.

Fun,reliability and cheap parts is more important than top speed, is MX5 the no brainer answer?

You could have one of these in your budget:

When cheap parts is a consideration at your budget the MX-5 is a no brainer really, just double check and then check again for rust. I believe the Mk3 is less prone to it but it's looks are a bit marmite, the most owners club members will tell you the Mk1 with pop up headlights is the one to have but you have to be so careful buying one to check on condition

Bought myself a MX5 NC for £3K earlier this year - great fun and has caused me no problems except for needing a new windscreen cowl grommet (which cost £1.90 and 10 minutes of my time)

I quite like the look of the mark 3. I might have to make a concession with regards to the electric hard top. The manual roof doesn't look like too much of a faff.

I had a mk1, roof could be manually lifted up and down with one hand.

I wasnt sure if you had to get out to open them but Now i realise you don't I am far more inclined to get the soft top. I have a little hardtop electric roofed car at the moment and there are quite a few times i think about putting the roof down but then dont because i might run out of time if the traffic moves off.. I may actually put the roof down more often on the soft top as it is so quick.

£3 to £4k will get you one of the better examples of a mk1 which will hold its value.

Interesting idea. Do 'we' think these are going to start appreciating? I suppose there is a certain model or trim level I should be looking for if I am thinking of it as an 'asset'? I guess normally its just the highest specced one..

Oh ..that IS nice. Many things to go wrong though!

Not sure about the 350z , they are fine cars but just not my style, too boy racery and I would drive it accordingly and get myself in trouble.

What appeals about the MX5's is they are small and fun at sensible speeds. The Merc would be lovely just to waft about in.

There's not a lot that goes wrong with the SLK running costs are sensible in terms of parts (the gearbox needs servicing every 40k at a cost of £250 from an Indy) prices are very sensible.

You're right the Mazda is more involving drive so you just need to work out which way gets (waft or involving drive) the nod.

That merc is really tempting but was not something that was on my radar. I have sent the garage a message to see if they are interested in any negotiations..
Also it has been flagged up that there might be some finance outstanding on it.

Considered a bmw Z3?
Don’t see many these days, slipping into retro cool imho. No idea on prices, but a manual 2.8i would be a nice thing?

Yup, just seen one on AT - black, 2.8i, manual, red leather, nice wheels, looks like a good private seller, £3k before a haggle.
