As the title says £4500 to spend criteria-

Golf sized or bigger
Decent seats (heated would be nice)
Smart looking
Reasonable economical (8000 miles a year of country lanes, a and b roads mostly + 2000 dual carriageway/motorway)
Must have 4/5 doors and be able to sit 4 adults in comfort
Bluetooth for the phone
A bit of go if necessary, I understand I will not get amazing performance!
Good service history/records of maintenance.
09 or newer would be a bonus

contenders I can think of -

Titanium Mondeo saloon
Focus, what is a good one seems a few engines?
Alfa Gulietta - 2.0 diesel, are they reliable?

Going off the other Lexus thread here, an IS250 might suit

My mother, 2 x brother in laws and good mate all have golfs, no problem but is there anything out there any better?

Thanks for the tip though I know they are decent and there is a massive range to choose from!

I've had one Golf or other since 1988, so I am a bit biased.

Any advice on engines?

1.6 diesel guessing that is asthmatic?

What do you have in mind?

Don't really mind, decent fuel economy and they way they pull is good for the type of driving we do. Have had a 1.4 eco boost fiesta, great engine but would feel underpowered on a decent sized car.

Yeah I get that, the low down pull makes for easy driving. You would also get that in a turbo petrol, with the added benefit of having a nicer engine, but a small extra cost in fuel.

Mazda 3 2.0 Sport Nav.
Focus underpinnings ( best drive in class ), lots of kit inc Bluetooth and heated seats as standard.
No major issues with these.
Find a good one and you're on to a winner.

They are quite thin on the ground though.

You don't need a diesel for your mileage.

Don't let that stop you I flew to Kirkcaldy to get one of my cars, going to Scotland isn't a big deal £80.00 return, the Alfa's are reliable & a decent steer to boot.
