Rumours abound that the Chancellor may consider scrapping the fuel duty escalator freeze ?

All in the name of CC no doubt ...

This is what was voted for. OK you had to read between the lines a bit but if you have a manifesto promising no rises in income tax, VAT or NI yet spending lots of money and announcing an “end to austerity” there had to be a tax rise somewhere. If you voted conservative this is on you!

The first time the conservatives got in back in 2010 they had in their manifesto to raise speed limits to 80mph on Motorways but instead they implemented more reductions in speed limits than labour did in the previous term.

Not sure what that has to do with fuel duty.

Also are you sure any government dictates speed reductions on a road or is that not for local/regional councils and I'm sure the Tories in 2010 didn't reduce motorway speed limits.

As for fuel duty, well it's no surprise really.

To be fair I think this was on the cards regardless of who you voted for. The zero emissions/net zero policies are pretty much settled, by weight of public opinion - any government would be stupid to start swimming against the tide at this point.

Hmmm.... so as we move off more economical diesel back into petrol, fuel duty unfreezes

We seem to be banking an awful lot on economic stability that might not be there in 12 months time

My hope is that hopefully they do unfreeze it, then I hope they hike it by a massive amount and this I hope results in something similar to the protests in France.

But one can only hope...

And it’s a moot point as we didn’t get a Conservative government anyway in 2010, we had a coalition. Manifesto is trumped by a Coalition Agreement in that scenario.

it might encourage take up of EVs the problem is fuel rises hit the poorest the hardest as it affects all cost given food an other goods tend to get to shops in lorries and not on the back of fair trade unicorns that only eat fairy dust.

HS2 my guess is Borris Vanity project 100bn biggest project in europe, it will create 1000s of jobs building it and then much like channel tunnel and M6toll not make a profit because its to expensive to use.

Also who wants to live in Birmingham and work in london even if the train takes 20 mins less

Yeah more take up of EVs, until the fuel duty on electricity is ramped up to current levels of petrol/diesel I.e. 57p+ And some tax per miles policy. Everyone will be paying more to use their fridge. hehe

Which is where variable road pricing comes in. Not before time either.

Happening in Norway. Large move to EV's where bridges, ferries, charging, road tax, tolls etc were free for EV's. BEV's are even VAT free. Govt loses a heap of dosh..um, eh, we'll have to reconsider...

of course the move to EV will result in methods to entice people but will need a new taxation model - price per mile I imagine.

Wonder how that will factor in for business mileage?

I think we all know the tax take won't decrease, the only way they might make EVs slightly more palatable will be because the tax on fuel will increase at an even more alarming rate.

Whatever the uptake/success of EV/infrastructure etc. the one thing they will have sorted out will be how to charge us for it...

Or they'll tax them because of the pollution from brake dust and tyre debris. Already seen a few articles creeping out on this, so likely it will be the big discovery that means EVs aren't as good for the environment as we originally thought.

Unlike the XR loons, I doubt the protest will be allowed to go on with police protection.

33 million full driving licence holders (2018)
Only 10% of the 33 million are more than the 123,000 police officers.

protection? laugh

Only 10-25% of the drivers will be enough to make a policy change, it’s a question of if they can be bothered.
