Hertz are renting cars cheap to some - see details in the main ‘deal’ thread.
Thrifty normally have some decent 30 day + rates, used the a few times to fill a gap.

My car with leaseplan is due back end of April, was due to go back next week. Leaseplan have emailed today to say they are not picking any up, and they are waiting on a decision to find out what is happening with the contracts and who is responsible for paying rentals and insurance. So will have to wait and find out

Wife's new lease (via Zen) was due tomorrow but got cancelled today.

Her current car is due to be collected by BCA on 9th April, so who knows what will happen!

I had swapped the insurance to the new car and kept the old one as temporary cover, but should probably swap back as I don't really want to be insuring a car when we don't have it.
Txt from BCA today:

Dear customer, you are due to have a vehicle collected by BCA Logistics but due to COVID-19 and recently introduced movement restrictions, we are unable to collect any vehicles at this time or for the next three weeks. We will be in touch as soon as we are able to cease operations. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Aside from someone getting confused between cease and resume, not surprising.

Presumably once restrictions are lifted everything will be back on so hoping we can still manage an overlap of a week or so.

I'm in same position with LP.
They tried telling me I was responsible for insuring it until its collected. Asked them to show me where that is in my contract. Then got the same message you did about waiting. Was due to be collected early, 2 year lease ends 12 April. Beyond that date I'm not responsible unless contract is extended. Which I'll only agree to if it's free and insurance reimbursed.

If people are handing back early I can't see how you can demand vwfs or the lease co pay for the insurance until after the end of your contract.

It was your choice to get another car and you signed at contract that says 24 months or whatever the term, all this cancelling direct debits etc etc good luck going up against vw/ lease co and their legal dept if it gets damaged or stolen when the contract you sign says it has to be insured fully comp.

I see where you are coming from but if you’ve agreed with then to hand back early then you’ve effectively changed the terms of your Contract and the end date etc. So you have a new contract ending on the date agreed and with the terms agreed - such as condition and proportionate mileage etc.

I think both sides have to be reasonable but I do think your Contract has been ended on the new date agreed and technically you have no responsibility.

Yeah kinell Santander... reading comments on other threads here about them refunding the insurance cost and effectively getting a free car until they collect etc... well that's what it sounded like on the phone. So I take out the insurance - not a problem, £44 a month, can roll it when needed.

Then I get the Santander email:

"Due to this we are offering customers, if they wish to keep the vehicle and have use of this, We will cover the cost of your insurance as the vehicle must be kept fully insured while in your possession. A £25 goodwill will also be provided."

So that's fine, as expected. Then:

"If you shall not be making use of the vehicle and it is kept at stand still while you have the vehicle in your possession, we will not charge you any daily rate fee and end your billing date at the original collection date request."

So, in other words they will be charging. At a daily rate not stated. FFS.

It's not as if I can use it much anyway at the moment... and when I can, restrictions on movement will be lifted and I expect it will be collected. And can I log today's condition or will you need it cleaning again?

How about a daily storage charge for my driveway? They'll say put it on the road... what happens if it gets damaged?

We’ve had some discussion via email and phone with Free2Move (PSA) and they have now advised we take out temporary insurance and they’ll reimburse the cost until they collect the car. Once covered under temporary park it somewhere and don’t drive it again.

We’ve sent in photos of the car on the day it was due to be collected (to both F2M and Mannheim who were due to collect).

Had a phone call from Crystal Collections who have been instructed by Santander to collect the V60 next week. Glad it will be shifting. Seems a bit odd though, so double checking with Santander that this was their instruction...

My early arranged collection was today, brought forward from 12 April. Leaseplan let me know early in the week they couldn't take it. That's fine, my original insurance is still in place, waiting for them to advise what they are going to do. Least there is a couple of weeks to sort it

I've managed to extend my Merc from Pink on a monthly basis as needed - they just need to stop it being collected on Monday (which was still scheduled).

Now I have something to clean every weekend during the lockdown biggrin

Another thing to check, road tax. Lease co are responsible for this. Mine runs out 1 April so they obviously taxed it a couple of weeks before I took delivery. When they call (email received saying will be before Tues) then I'll be asking about that as well

Just got this from vwfs even though they have already collected my car maybe of use to others on here.

If you do not extend the car will be UNINSURED.

If you do not wish to extend your contract please be aware we will not be able to proceed with collection until the Government restrictions have been lifted. Until we are able to rearrange collection please follow the below important steps;

-The vehicle must not under any circumstance be driven*-Keep the vehicle safe, locked, secure and where possible store the vehicle off the road and on private land-Please remove all personal belongings, keys and keyless entry devices-We will ensure the vehicle is taxed as appropriate throughout this period-In the event the vehicle is stolen or damaged by fire, you must immediately notify us and the police and obtain a crime reference number
Please note, you will not be charged your monthly rental for the period between your contract end date and collection. Standard end of contract terms will still apply for damage and excess mileage once the vehicle is collected and inspected.

The vehicle will be uninsured and must not be driven; Under s143 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to use (or permit to be used) a motor vehicle on a road or other public place when there is not in force in relation to the use of the vehicle such a policy of insurance in respect of third party risks as complies with the Road Traffic Act

Once contract is up, if its left parked on the road, or on a drive without SORN in place aren't the lease company, as registered owner/keeper committing an offence under Continuous Insurance Enforcement if they don't insure it themselves?
Probably why they're offering free or cheap extensions as the onus is then back on us re insurance

Don’t worry about it. If you don’t want to extend then you don’t need to insure. Vwfs clearly aren’t daft and will have their uncollected cars appropriately insured for that ‘standing’ need.

Yeah, I get that, don't understand why the lease companies are telling us to insure the car if we don't want to extend. If they have insurance in place, what's the point of us wasting money insuring it twice. Leaseplan have it on their website covid faqs.

Having had an email from Santander that they would be collecting my XC90 last week, just had a call from an outfit saying that they have been instructed to collect and would Thursday be fine..

Are others finding Santander are using others rather than Manhiem or BCA??

I’m surprised to have heard this, but my Dad’s 420GC lease is being delivered from Birmingham to London tomorrow. He was given a day’s notice.
