Dear all

This forum is amazing for advice, having helped me buy my first used car (Mazda 2), and then subsequently helping me track down a lorry that squashed it....

Now my father in law wants to get a new car and I am trying to persuade him to avoid getting another PCP as I think it's a bit of a waste.

His current PCP with his Land Rover Discovery Sport is ending which was about £400 a month.

I am trying to persuade him to get a used car for under £15-20k which I believe is better value long term

He has arthritis so he would like an automatic car with heated steering wheel and seats..but other than that he just want's something a bit...prestigious and reliable

Do you guys have any car recommendations?

One idea I had was a used Lexus IS 300 as I hear they are pretty reliable?
If he could buy the used car on finance that would be great but not sure if that narrows down too much

Thanks so much

If he has enjoyed his Disco Sport then how much would it cost to buy it at the end of the PCP rather than trade it in or send it back?

As above a merc would be a good choice. E or S class usually have all the luxuries.

Lexus RX 450 h , ultra reliable and ease of access being a high seating position SUV, also they’re all auto too.

He would have to pay around £25K to buy the vehicle which I suppose is not that bad for a two year old LR discovery sport

I just think for around £15k he could get a used car that would serve his needs fine.

I want to get him out of the headspace of using PCP, he sometimes doesn't spend money too wisely (only recently persuaded him not to join a cult)

Tell him to look for one of these they have everything (adaptive cruise heated seats/steering wheel 360 cameras etc) he's looking for with a fit & finish above his Discovery Sport:

Or it's baby brother

Or the hybrid saloon version.

Or if your dad wants proper luxury then tell him to take a look at the CL500 your budget will land you a loaded one & they're not overly expensive to run.

I'll second this, fantastic car, comfy and uber reliable with loads of gadgets. The slightly smaller NX could also be of consideration.

IS 300 is a good shout but it’ll be too low especially after the SUV. NX 300H is a better bet. Same engine, same luxury, but a tad higher for ease of access.

If he struggles with access then a saloon will be no good. My dad has had Evoques for years and has back trouble, he has to fold himself into my A4 uncomfortably.

The Audi Q3/Q5, BMW X1/X3 and the Mercedes GLC would all fit the bill perfectly, along with the Evoque in fact which is worth a look if he likes the Disco. Lexus is a great shout too, especially for a used buy as they don't go wrong as much as the Germans typically.

Check out the SEAT Ateca XCellence and the Ford Kuga Vignale as they will be better value, but will lack the prestige feel. For £20k though you'll get a better/newer example of these than the Germans.

You won't go wrong with any of the SUV options really, just watch the spec as they often vary hugely from car to car.

Thanks guys I will throw some of these suggestions to him and try to get him to shift away from a PCP arrangement.

Half the budget and get a Lexus is250 auto, crap on fuel and tax but everything else it’s good and very unlikely to go wrong.

My mum has one, she has Parkinson’s but finds it fine. She also seems to do 50mph in any speed limit so I’m assuming it’s a sweet spot for the big lump. Now on a 59 plate and owned from 12 months old I did have to fix it after 6 weeks not moving yesterday The original batt has given up.

Has to be a car with higher seating and comfortable suspension setup. The Lexus RX is a good shout. Look at the Ford Edge as well, more tuned for comfort and probably relatively cheap.
