My daughter's about to start learning and none of our cars are suitable for her so I've got to buy another car.
Thinking ahead to when she's passed the test and has to get insured - how much difference is there between two relatively low insurance groups?
For example - 1.1l fiesta, 70PS or so - group 5; 1.0 ecoboost fiesta, 99PS, - group 10?
Is there a massive jump group 5 to 10?

I've personally not cared about insurance group. Best thing to do is to get the details of potential cars and put their details in on Comparison sites. This is why back in the day something silly like a Volvo 240 was super cheap compared to a fiesta et al. The Volvo just wasn't crashed by young drivers.

yes Bear in mind that she will be FAR more expensive to insure once she passes her test than she is as a learner, so get some quotes for a fresh full licence with her as the main driver.

Yes, that's exactly my thinking - something that's not going to be crazy to insure when she's passed.
Taking the Fiesta example, I'm sure the little ecoboost is a better car than the 1.1 (and there are loads around, which helps) - but it's no good if it's going to be loads more to insure.

I recently bought a car for my daughter as a present for her 17th birthday.
The insurance prices for learners are surprisingly cheap so thought it best to check the prices for after the test pass.
I ran a few different cars through the comparison sites for a fictitious 17 year old who had just passed their test and had zero NCB. The quotes for various cars did not seem to follow the insurance group, so my advice would be for you to do the same for the various cars you are considering.

Insurance groups don't always decide price.

My fist year quotes were:

Land Rover Defender 2.5NAD 90" 1988 - £800 PA fully comp, car value £3500.
Renault Clio 1.4 2007? - £1700 PA fully comp, car value £4000.
Honda Civic 1.6 SE Exec 2002 (my first car) - £2600 PA fully comp, car value £675 paid.

For an experiment:
Jaguar XE 2.2 2015 - £997 PA fully com, car value £15'000.

I got the 1.0l Fiesta Ecoboost several years later, great car. If it's cheap enough to insure for you I'd recommend.
