It’s been a while since I posted an update (primarily because nothing of note has occurred)...

0335 today, Mrs S and I were both in bed, when there’s a persistent knocking on the door. Startled, and still very groggy, we look out the window to see a police car where my wife’s Mini Cooper S should be, and an empty space on the drive where my C43 should be... Oh.

Turns out some Untermenschen had snapped the lock on the rear French doors, had a rifle through our meagre possessions, and then made off with both cars.

The Mini was recovered after someone called the police having heard unusual goings on outside her house (several miles down the road). No sign of the C43...

I’ve bought the tracker thing on Mercedes Me, but that claims my car’s still at our house. At the very least, I’m expecting my money back on that subscription...

Just waiting for CSI, which also means the house is freezing (can’t close the door so as to preserve evidence), and I’ve taken the time to have a quick look at what impact a non-recovery would have on my insurance costs: £687 this year (£500 excess); £2100 with the theft (£3000 (!) excess).

That's awful news mate.
Did you have gap insurance? Do you know how that's going to work out in terms of you getting back to parity or close enough?

Thanks for the concern all.

Things have moved relatively quickly since this morning:

- one perp in custody (he’s currently on bail for car theft...)
- both cars now recovered; no mention of damage (if any) as yet.
- the pillock(s) managed to leave half a lock barrel in the back of the C43: this has been matched to the remaining half.
- GMP have been very good actually: officers bothering to attend in the first instance, then CSI were along earlyish this morning.
- the home insurance provider has dispatched a locksmith to replace all the affected locks (with anti-snap locks, I hope).
- next steps are to arrange transport for myself to get to work over the next few days, while CSI finish examining the cars; then fitting a sturdier gate at the side of the house.
- the big question is do I keep the C43, or get something less attractive to bellsniffs? I’d hoped a monochrome grey, debadged C class wouldn’t attract too much attention, but local dullards have proven me wrong with their joyride...

Thoughts welcome

Not to hijack a difficult moment but I did see you'd previously looked at the 440i. Mine is just up for sale now due to working from home (thanks covid). If you wanted something fast and practical but less stealable I'd suggest one. Welcome to discuss the pros and cons of them anytime, and i won't hard sell mine (much) lol.

You do realise they took the cars because they had the keys! In that instance how would your 440 be less resistant to being stolen?

BMW's are more easy to steal than the Mercedes we're not talking massive margins but every second counts.

OP I'm glad you're getting sorted, as long as the cars are mechanically sound then I'd keep them.

I meant in the context of it being less desirable and a 2 door. From the front it could be a 420d.

Really sorry to hear this Bob!

FWIW, your C43 was almost a sleeper, and I just suspect that they were opportunists who took what they could once they had broken in....

The very best of luck getting it all sorted. Look after yourselves!

Thanks for the good wishes all.

Police have finished examining the cars and we’re due to collect them tomorrow.

A very pleasant chap from CID was round this evening, updating us on the case: it seems there were 3 perps, one of whom was arrested at the scene, 2 of whom are still at large, but known to the police. The toughest thing currently is not feeling safe in our own home: it’s not a feeling I’d wish upon anyone really...

I did laugh when the detective constable told us the guy they’d arrested had been released on bail, despite having nicked our cars whilst already being on bail! The mind boggles... We’re told they’re aiming to charge him with burglary (rather than TWOC or riding in a stolen vehicle), but that requires lots of forensics, which will allegedly take 6-8 weeks.
