^^ This ^^ Nothing else comes close to overall ability. 4/5 car in all areas. 3.0tdi peach of an engine.
Completely agree with this.

How about a very clean, low miles A6 Allroad 3.2 V6.

I've been a passenger in a Q5 and I can't recall a single thing about it other than that it was the most anodyne, boring, unremarkable vehicle.

I've owned a Touareg and whilst it was a decent enough car (I had the Hybrid, with the S5 engine up front) it was very car-like and not very SUV-like.

I'm on my second L322 and yes, this one is the 5.0 S/C. To the poster above who said "very very thirsty" - what do you call thirsty, and compared to what? For a 3-tonne, >500bhp house brick, I can live with a regular 22mpg.
If you're getting 22mpg you must be driving Miss Daisy. There are two in our car park and they both average mid/high teens - more on a motorway run of course.
I'd argue that mid to high teens is still entirely reasonable. Sure, if I go two miles down the road and stop again, the dash shows a lot less than 22, but 22 on a reasonable journey out is entirely possible. The fuel economy is better (all relative of course) than my previous 4.4 petrol n/a AJV8 one.

But moaning about fuel economy on a large SUV with a 5l engine is like moaning that the Airbus you went on holiday in used more fuel than your Micra.

laugh Quite right..!!

I do love my colleague's L322. We took it out for a performance comparison with my GL350CDI one lunchtime. Just a standing start from a roundabout onto a duel carriageway - up to 60 and up to 100, just to see how they perform.

Despite the Rangey being ~300Kg heavier than mine (according to different internet sources - so take with the usual pinch of salt), he got to 60 over a second quicker than mine and 100 "several" seconds quicker.

Both are full of leather and electronic gadgets. Both would be epic on a roadtrip (his has an LPG conversion too - so costs wouldn't be significantly different to mine. I tried to convince him to come to the Arctic wth me in Feb but he dropped out). Both are competent offroad, although their size means I wouldn't use either for green laning or quarry days but you know they can handle a lot if you need them to. Both need £££ throwing at them from time to time because they're old now (his is a MY09 and mine's a MY61) and stuff just needs attention here and there (we have both recently replaced our air suspension - similar prices too - about £1200). Both force you to find a usefully competent non-main dealer garage (I travel 30 miles for mine but it's *so* worth it).

Haven't got any pictures of the GL next to the Range Rover at work. I thought I had a cracking one of them both next to each other with a Smart car either side of them - looking like book ends - but I can't find it.

Others include... our old ML loaded up for a holiday in France. It's a fantastic way to travel. So comfy, and your destination feels "inevitable", as though there could be nothing to halt the progress of a car like this

My GL next to another colleague's Q7. He had even bigger wheels than mine (mine are 21" and his 22". Truth is, I don't like big wheels - I like big tyres but we bought our cars 2nd hand and that's what they came with)

Our ML next to its replacement - the X5. The X5 was lighter and (considerably) faster than the ML despite them both being 3-litre diesels. We didn't have the X5 for long though - stolen off the drive 6-weeks after we bought it presumably using that OBDII exploit we have all read about. That was 7 years ago - I suspect they aren't so sought after now, or there's a modification that'll make it more secure.

I particularly liked the Land Rover inspired split tailgate of the X5 and the widescreen satnav system. And it looked generally sharper than the ML, although, if we had ever had it over a winter - I suspect a set of winter tyres would have been expensive in those sizes

The ML towed my mother's 26' caravan almost like it wasn't even there. It had 224bhp. My GL has 260-something but feels more much more powerful. I have occasionally wondered if might be a placebo associated with the GL's air suspension making it just feel as though it going faster. There are a lot of differences between the two, despite them sharing a common platform

Wife has a GLC350CDI now - same engine as my GL's bit with about 600 fewer Kgs which makes it fly. We had more choice than when I bought the GL, so we made sure it had sensible wheels and tyres, and the ride is pretty decent, and it doesn't suffer with that skipping issue that the GLCs with low profile tyres do when turning on full lock.

Do you need something that big. A Subaru Forester Turbo would tick all your boxes, and the overhangs look short enough to give you nothing to worry about.

We've had two E70 X5s, great cars and well within your budget. Current one is a 40d seven-seater, perfect for family life, eats tyres but otherwise fairly sensible to run. Both have been pretty reliable.

Edited to add - we also have a very sloping driveway, and you do have to choose cars carefully. Ride height is obviously relevant but my 911 and (previous) Vantage were both fine because they have short overhangs. On the other hand, my Dad's estate car grounds itself and so does a friend's A6 Avant. If you pick a car with short overhangs you might be surprised by what you can get away with.

In starting a new job in September and am looking at cars for the commute. Needs to be an SUV as we’ve got a difficult driveway which will scrape any low nose.

Up to £15k budget, need something auto, fast(ish) and 30mpg plus.

Anything obvious that I’ve missed? I’ve looked at Q5, X5, Volvo XC60, RX450. Help appreciated!
OP if your leaving a “secure” job to a new one in Sept you’ll have a 3+ month probationary period (more so as furlough unwinds). Wouldn’t the smartest move be (assuming you’re nailed on to change jobs lose the length of service /redundancy) run what you have until you pass probation then make a choice. The extra you’ll pay in fuel in 3 months will be not a huge amount £ wise I’d seriously be sucking it up.

If it's just extra ground clearance you need do you even need a true 4x4 SUV?

What about a Korean, Hyundai or Kia SUV or a Japanese SUV?

Depends on how fast you mean and how much value you place in badge kudos though.

We have a 2013 mk1 XC90 it is an absolutely hateful dog of a vehicle having lunched 3 autoboxes in its 90k miles and 7 years on this planet. The interior rattles like nothing else I've ever experienced, the leather looks fked, well the parts of the interior that are actually leather and not some stty vinyl pretending to be leather. Remove a headlight to swap a bulb and you get a fking airbag light. Remove the radio and you get a fking airbag light. It's tragic to drive. Rubbish on fuel but then it's powered by the most gutless 3.2 6 pot engine I've used. Eats tyres and bushes for fun.

Buy something japanese.
