Re-considering the family fleet?
Discussion
A family of four. We currently have a big, modern, estate car and an old supermini.
Over the lockdown, the estate car has been used very rarely. It is handy for tip runs and diy shop visits, but could be more practical and there are few(none) opportunities for the sort of high speed cruising or interesting driving that it is good for. My work is likely to become 50:50 home working. My commute is less than 10 miles by bike, so the car will be rarely needed
The supermini is used by my wife for driving to work sites and offices. It is fun to drive and is actually big enough for most family visits, although not ideal for biking and camping.
My current thoughts are that when the supermini dies, a small-ish EV could replace it, and a medium sized van-based MPV in place of the estate car would be the best combination. I don't want a full on "camper van".
Has anybody done this kind of thing? Any regrets?
Edit: Why was this moved to "car buying"? I'm not asking about which car to buy, so it is now lost....

I see where you are going with your thought process, my only thought on it is where is the driving enjoyment in your plan because it seems you will end up with two functional practical vehicles but two that will be very uninspiring from a driving enjoyment point of view? Maybe that doesn't bother you but this is Pistonheads after all.

That is one of my concerns, but to be honest, I rarely get to drive anywhere for fun nowadays anyway. Back in the day I would enjoy taking scenic routes to my biking/climbing/fell running trips most weekends. These days, those trips are infrequent and there are fewer opportunities to drive "exuberantly" on the same roads anyway (SPECS and reduced limits). The current old Fiesta is great to drive and I will miss it when it goes. I enjoy driving, but have reached the point where it is far less about the car than the activity itself.
