Yeah I think that’s what I’m gonna do too. But the tight arse in me is now thinking I should get a used 2018 premier edition and pocket the difference between them (£45K ish and the £58K ish of the S)
Buy a PE and enjoy it for the remainder of the warranty. Then take it to Litchfield for the 300hp tune - at the same time get the Pook suspension tweaks done and you’ve got the best of all worlds - not driven an S yet but I’ve heard the suspension is not as compliant on road.

I came very close to buying an Alpine recently but ended up in an Exige V6 and I can’t recommend one highly enough. There’s a real sense of occasion to it, every drive feels like an event and the steering is incredible. I owned an Elise previously and it does everything the Elise did so well but in a more grown up, exciting package. It’s wonderful! The noise is addictive too...

All that said, the Alpine is probably a better all rounder, more useable and something a little different. There’s not much in it with regards to performance either really. Check out the Life 110 car if you haven’t already. I spent an unhealthy amount of time just staring at the pictures it’s so gorgeous! One of the prettiest cars on sale imo.

I am intending to look at an Exige as well, I think there would be too much overlap with my RX7 though. I think the Alpine will provide more comfort and better doing longer trips (without needing to visit a petrol station every 250 miles).

I will see though, I will be back home this weekend so can start going to look at the options properly.

On paper they look great. But I don’t know what it is about Mercedes (and BMW to be fair) they just don’t excite me. I know they are hugely capable and insanely engineered cars but they’ve just always come across as a little bit... soulless? Probably going to get a huge amount of hate for saying it though.

Thought the same, then drove one and even against McLaren it had more character, have driven most high end cars and this thing exudes old TVR in spades, try it and then decide, it’s certainly more characterful than many of the cars listed here that I’ve driven.

I thought exactly the same until I drove an amg engined car.

Had my slk 55 for 5 years now and it still excites me every time I turn the key. Just starting it up is an event.

Have only recently discovered Harrys Garage & love his no bullst pragmatic not up-himself approach. A guy out to tell it like it is without trying to be a personality unlike some of the cringing personalities should you browse car reviews on Youtube.
Does anybody rate Honest John when it comes to getting an opinion?

Probably the same people who by "which" magazine. If you sold them a paid facebook account it'd be tantamount to the same thing.

The AMG GT is nothing like any of the AMG engined mercedes, S, SL, SLK, CLK, C63 etc etc are nothing like it.

I dont mean that in a derogatory way, i currently have an S63 and have had many AMG engined cars, theyre very good but just feel the same as M cars do to the normal models.

Think SLS or SLR and you’l be much closer to how the AMG GT feels.

I have one and my spec came in at around 75K. You need to factor in the hefty first year road tax and basic options that most people would want over the list price. I doubt there are many spec'd under 70K

i've been keeping a close eye on these myself and saw a lovely spec in GT Silver for 75~ like you say you would need to have a poverty spec one with some hefty mileage on it to qualify in the OP's budget.

amazing motors! i'd love one

Re: OP's question, i'd personally be looking at Cayman GT4, 997 Carrera GTS or AM V12 Vantage (Outsider would be AMG GT/GTS)

I did have a play with the Porsche configurator for the GTS, but it very quickly got out of hand! Maybe in a couple of years!

Will do a little bit of research on the AMG GT as well

When I was trying to answer the same question 3 years ago, I ended up with my second Evora, in this case an S Sports Racer

Overall pretty cheap to run and more of a sports car than some suggestions on here.

For me after 3 years though it was time for a change, so I went for a Ferrari 360 - definitely costs more to run, but what an engine smile

love to hear more about your feelings on these two cars.
which direction do you think you'll go next? in general terms of chassis, engine, drivetrain layout. in other words, a proper petrolhead conversation!

in the US (where else..) somebody put a Ferrari engine in a GT86. best combo?

In that price bracket I would be looking at an AM V12 Vantage (non S), an R8 V10 manual, an F360 (maybe a stretch; probably have to be an F1), and Evora, Cayman, 997 turbo, or a 996 GT3. Plenty of great cars to choose from. Depends how raw you want; whether you want the engine or the handling or the occasion or a combination; whether you want modern or retro...

Lexus LC500 ? 5 litre N/A V8, reasonable performance, probably bombproof and will hold its value ...plus not many people have one.

3 suggestions

1. 987 Turbo - Ballistically quick, handles like it’s on rails, will hold its value very well if looked after. Probably it’s only major flaw is that it is too good and too competent

2. Ferrari 308 - Not a quick car by a long stretch by today’s standard and hard work, but one of the best looking cars ever made, every drive in it is an event and has buckets of character.

3. Honda NSX - Pretty much the mid point between the two cars above and you would hope would be a safe investment, whilst being very user-friendly still be today’s standards
