I'd drop all the saloon based coupes for a toy, personally.

Elise or some kind of Caterham fits the bill. Or SLK55 if they are too hardcore.

Have you dropped the Boxster idea altogether? You could consider a 987.1 3.2 to avoid bore scoring. Will have some bork fund left over as well, but not required IME.

Z4M on that list, maybe a s/c s2000..

Caterham etc you wouldnt use enough to make it feel like you were getting value.

A year ago I might have agreed with you as I'd had a couple of 3.0Si Coupes for over 5 years and found them great fun with sensible running costs.

But then I went to look at an M Coupe, and inevitably ended up buying one last December. laugh

OK it was twice the price of my 3.0Si and running costs are way higher, but that S54 engine is just fantastic which is what makes them special IMHO. And having only 592 M Coupes registered in the UK keeps them pretty exclusive!

Agree about the saloon based coupes. Not weekend material. Daily driver material IMO. Many of them are not even proper coupes.

It really depends on the person. If it's a weekend car for me I would want something really different from the average daily box. So probably rear mid engine or at least a V8. Or a Caterham if that floats your boat. Even things like Z4s and SLKs are basically daily driver material.

But again, depends on what you want or can afford.

I'd say it depends on what you want & where you want to be finance wise, something like an M2 still has a bit of depreciating to do whereas the cars you mention have done the worst of their depreciation.

Another car I'd add to your list is the 370Z Nismo to me it's fantastic underrated steer it's also has a special feel to it & imo it a better car than the Z4M but it will mean maybe a small loan to land one.

Personally I find the Gen1's a little bit rawer & better for it but most of those I've supplied are Gen2's which clients seem to prefer.

TT RS's do feel special that engine is something else, my mate loved his one so much that when his little one came along he bough an RS3:

If you're considering an M3 then take a look at the IS-F it's a car gets under your skin & has a cracking V8:

I bit the bullet and got a 1998 911 996 C2. I’ve always wanted one and was very tempted by something more modern like an SLK55 but I think I would have regretted not getting one.

Mines a leggy one and needed a fair few jobs doing but I knew that when I bought it and it was all DIY’able with a decent set of spanner’s.
