Most reliable car for £8k
Discussion
Spend most of my time lurking however looking to purchase a new daily.
Looking for the most reliable car ideally. Have an XC60 for the wife and child however she returns to work soon so require another car, have a budget of around £8k and looking for something that can keep on going for a few years with little to no work other than usual tyres/breaks etc.
I do around 12k miles for work however live fairly rural so the car will be used to soak up all types of trips like shopping etc so probably looking at 15k+ per year
No size requirement as we have the XC60 anytime we need the space not really fussed about petrol or diesel as long as the MPG returns are reasonable. Electric not an option for now

I’d say buy something as new as possible which probably means going for a small city car.
Maybe a Kia picanto?
Get a decent spec one with the 1.2 engine so it’ll cope with faster roads. If you’re rural then something that small and narrow could be useful on the lanes and skinny tyres good in the winter weather. 7 year warranty too so not much to worry about.

I'd normally say anything Japanese, but I think Nissan have lost their way in recent years.
Toyota, Honda, Lexus for reliability and decent dealers.
Sharing engines with Renault is the problem.Toyota, Honda, Lexus for reliability and decent dealers.
I'd definitely say a Honda. We've had 5 of them in the family and not 1 has ever had anything other than routine maintenance.
Last one was a 2008 Civic hybrid owned for the last 8 years. Serviced once every year and that was it.
There are some very good options for your budget that'll soak up 15k a year:

Did have a look at the citigo, wasnt sure how a city car would hold up at the mileage im doing. Also not convinced it would be so great in poor weather like floodingMaybe a Kia picanto?

Mondeo looks like it could be a good fit. Unsure if there are any common issues to expect with ones around my budget/mileage

The Insignia is reliable & well worth a look when you consider age/spec/mileage vs cost the VFM pick is the DS5 with the same engine as the Mondeo & mated to a conventional auto running costs are lower as is the mileage & they're a nice place to while away the miles I would reccomend test driving one.Mondeo looks like it could be a good fit. lexus is250.
get it in SE-L trim with auto box and it'll go for ever!
will be a nice place to be too with:
leather
cooled/heated seats
auto box
quiet
smooth v6
good audio if you get ML sound system
etc
can get a very good one for under that budget.
Seconded. I thought ours was surprisingly good on fuel. Even if it uses more than you really want, it'll repay you by never going wrong and being a nice place to be.lexus is250.

My 14 plate 1.8 petrol civic manual hasn't needed any maintenance beyond standard servicing, tyres, brakes etc.
Owned it 4 years now. Cost around 10-11k at 2/3 years, tech edition so has things like reversing camera and no doubt other stuff I'm not aware of being extra to standard models.
One of the biggest boots in hatchback class, although I see that's not important to you.
Not the most exciting, but appears to live up to the honda reliability reputation.

Toyota Pruis 3rd gen or Lexus CT 200h if you want more luxury in exchange for a couple of years older.

Can I throw in a curve ball? Dacia Sandero new starts at about 8k. Decent size too. Not interesting probably but new car so no worries over consumables early on, or MOTs, etc. If reliability is key factor then seems like a new car with associated warranties etc would be route I'd consider.
Having said that, 15k a year is a decent amount of driving time so I'd want something with comfy seats!
