Seconded. I thought ours was surprisingly good on fuel. Even if it uses more than you really want, it'll repay you by never going wrong and being a nice place to be.lexus is250.

done ~26k over 2.5 years in my 1.6 i-dtec which is now 7 years old and probably averaged about 67mpg (63 winter, 68 summer and 80+ on a long run)
sporty drive, incredibly quiet diesel engine and a big boot.
zero faults, just a service every year and tyres.
it does everything, well except straight line speed, there its adequate!
£8k will get you a 5 year old car with decent spec (SE-Plus and above) and average mileage.
