easy.

lexus is250.

get it in SE-L trim with auto box and it'll go for ever!

will be a nice place to be too with:

leather
cooled/heated seats
auto box
quiet
smooth v6
good audio if you get ML sound system

etc

can get a very good one for under that budget.
Seconded. I thought ours was surprisingly good on fuel. Even if it uses more than you really want, it'll repay you by never going wrong and being a nice place to be.
Thirded , my wife has one, bought a couple of years ago for £3k with about 100k miles on it and so far the only problem has been one ABS sensor which was cheap and very easy to DIY fix. Average mpg is about 39 over the time we've had it. Lovely car all round.

another civic vote.

done ~26k over 2.5 years in my 1.6 i-dtec which is now 7 years old and probably averaged about 67mpg (63 winter, 68 summer and 80+ on a long run)
sporty drive, incredibly quiet diesel engine and a big boot.
zero faults, just a service every year and tyres.

it does everything, well except straight line speed, there its adequate!

£8k will get you a 5 year old car with decent spec (SE-Plus and above) and average mileage.
