the 2.5 p38 is the slowest car I have ever owned... it struggled to climb the hill out of Cheltenham when I bought it, so it was then off to JE engineering for a stage 2 conversion which transformed it...
Oops really? I lasted a long while in my 19J Defender which had like 80hp. Did you have any issues putting it in for a stage 2? What does it consist of as I would imagine it predates an ECU map or flash. but new intercooler / chipped / etc. - gave it about 50% more horsepower, and MPG went from c. 24 to c. 28 - and transformed the car...
I really like the internal cabin simplicity of the P38a - one of the best in terms of balance between lack of road noise / simple and not too fussy etc. - but I wouldn't have another one - I only bought that as I had got rid of classics (should have held onto them!) and the L322 was too expensive...
I would now go classic or L322 - in fact I bought one of the last of the classics - a soft dash... far simpler on electronics

I’m actually pursuing a few leads on the L322. Just trying to scope out all the issues with them so I can do into it with my eyes open.

Which one are you looking at the TD6?.I’m actually pursuing a few leads on the L322. Just trying to scope out all the issues with them so I can do into it with my eyes open.
Gearboxes are a weak point on them, check underneath for signs of damage and rust!, a bit of surface rust is to be expected but check nothing is rotten, they tend to rust on the rear arches too so factor in getting that done.
Heavy on suspension and bushes so check nothing is amiss there, air suspension can have issues too but isn’t the expensive, terrifying bill that some make out.

Started with a p38 2.5. Then ZX10 talked me into a td6. Now the mrs has decided she really likes the facelift. So I’m looking at TDV8/TDV6/SDV6.
Just not sure of Vogue vs Sport now...

I know it’s not a premium 4X4, but as an alternative suggestion; what about a jap double cab pickup?
Likely to be much more reliable, you can get even more stuff in it and would be excellent use for the house renovation.
To be honest I don’t need the 4x4 so much. I’m just a ponce. Likely to be much more reliable, you can get even more stuff in it and would be excellent use for the house renovation.
Though I did LOVE the Hilux from yrs ago that top gear sent to the arctic.
Harry (of Harrys' garage) did a review of his L322 TDV8, I think he said the V6 was one to avoid as it was gutless.

There never was a V6 L322, petrol or diesel, it was the BMW straight six until around 2006, then the TDV8s.Found it

From a cost perspective I’d go for a Vogue with decent service history, the TDV8 doesn’t suffer the potential crank issues of the TD/SD V6, and for some reason turbo failure isn’t as common on TDV8 Vogues as it is with Sports, plus if they do go,while still being a big job it isn’t nearly as much hassle as with a Sport which is a body off job!.So I’m looking at TDV8/TDV6/SDV6.

If you get TDV8 get one with good service history, clean oil and let the car idle for a minute or so after use plus check all your intercooler hoses are ok to take care of your turbos, whichever model you decide on, check the gearbox is ok and factor in a gearbox oil and filter change when you’ve bought it and do one every 50k or so no matter what anyone tells you.
Anything else isn’t going to be that much of a shock cost wise on an L322 now imo, plenty of patent bits for the wear and tear stuff now.
If you can stretch to one my pick would be a late L322 with the 8 speed gearbox and 4.4 Diesel engine.

Summary, from memory, feel free to correct me anyone:
P38 Petrol - various versions of the Rover V8, 4.0 and 4.6
P38 Diesel - 2.5 straight six
L322 Petrol - initially the BMW 4.4 V8 until about 2005/2006. Then either the N/A 4.4 AJV8 (very good, very rare) or the S/C 4.2 AJV8. Finally the S/C 5.0 V8 (hilarious to drive)
L322 diesel - initially the 3.0 BMW diesel, then the 3.6 TDV8 and then the 4.4 TDV8

Sorry that I can't seem to leave my anorak on the coat stand but in FFRR-land the diesel V6s are only available in the L405 and that will mean a whole new consideration in budget terms!

I was saying a TDV8 Vogue is a better pick than the TD/SDV6 in the Sport, or the TDV8 in the Sport either from a maintenance/cost of repairs/reliability point of view.Summary, from memory, feel free to correct me anyone:

You are quite right the L322 has never had a V6 diesel only the TD6 which is a BMW straight 6 and the V8 diesel in 3.6 and 4.4 forms, the 4.4 being the best of the bunch imo.
