Think the verdict is in and the TTS is a lot cheaper, there were a few good deal 640d's which was the sole reason fo this thread and now they're pretty much all sold around 11k for under 80k miles!

I was searching through the forums and found this as I’m in exactly the same dilemma right now. The only thing I’d add to the original post is that I’d also consider a 640d m sport coupe or convertible but prices of these seem to have ballooned even in comparison to the whole used car increases

What’s the general consensus on TTS/6 series or other options I hadn’t considered in the current price and supply situation?

How much do you want to spend? What are you looking for from the car?

Something engaging to drive that isn’t an out and out sports car but something that is aesthetically nice to look at both inside and out too.

I need something that I can rely on as a daily driver that has gone through its biggest depreciation dip but that also is relatively interesting (ie not see loads of them every day)

Room for me and the mrs for road trips/weekends away with some rear seats/behind seat space for our small dogs for short journeys if needed.

A budget of up to £16-17k Max and something that isn’t too high on the road tax front either.

I think that’s a reasonable summary but I might have missed some bits. I’m planning on test driving the TTS coupe, 640d m sport coupe and the 640d m sport convertible too. I had thought about going lower on the budget And looking for an older (lower road tax) well looked after SL350 (ala the smoker barge thread) but am very wary that bills could get very big very quickly if I made a bad choice there too..

All advice would be more than welcomed, I’ve had to suffer the boring company car choices for some time so this is my first carte Blanche car decision for a long while

Are you the OP?

If you are the OP there are some decent options.

I’m the reviver of the thread rather than the OP mate, but thanks for the input.

To be honest, I’d ignored the 4 series on the basis that there are so many of them around and for similar money the quality of the 6 series exterior and interior makes that a much more appealing choice for me.

I hadn’t even seen the infinity before so that’s a completely new option, while the TTS does fit I haven’t driven one or even sat in one yet but that’s on the test drive list.

Have you driven the infinity, TTS or 6 series, if so how do you think they compare?

The 6 series is the nicest inside as a drive it's decent but it feels every bit of it's width, the TTS will be the sportiest drive of the 3 because of it's smaller stature.

The Infiniti is somewhere between the two a good swift steer that's a nice place to be, the 4 series is the best of the four.

6 series will be a nicer drive and comfortable place to sit. TT will be more fun.

My sisters got the current TT in 2lt guise (235bhp) we used it for a long distance motorway run. Single tank covered just shy of 500 miles and returned 46.7 mpg. Which I was very surprised at and it actually beat my 635d which just about gets 42mpg on a long run.

The 640d is supposed to be better on fuel with zf8 box but I think it's marginal I.e 45-47

at 70mph cruise i used to get 43-44 from the 240i.

i don't think the mpg gap (unless driving crazy) is that much anymore

I’ve definitely got a very soft spot for the 640d in m sport guise, so that’s great to hear. As with most cars, the prices have gone covid crazy on all of these. It’s noticeable as I’ve been watching prices of the 640d since before Covid.

The sportiness of the TTS definitely appeals but having driven past one of the mark 3 s-lines the other day they do look nice. I like those quilted optional leather seats too, maybe I will check those out too. The volume of them available might make picking up a good deal more possible too, although it seems there are a lot more tdi than petrol around in the ads

Slight different, below the radar option SLK350 - circa 2009 onwards has the 310bhp v6 and a folding tin top?

It’s a good suggestion as I hired an SLK 350 while I was away in Cape Town and have some great driving memories flying around the Cape in that little rockets ship.

But with the SLK lacking any behind seats space for our small dogs to curl up on journeys out (unlike the SL350) I wrote that one off as an option, similarly the Z4.
