BMW M140i vs Golf R. Which is best for Britain and tuning?

For reference on price, I just paid £24500 for my '19 M240i. It's really well specced (pro nav, HK, camera, elec memory seats etc), one owner, 22k miles, so the one you drove seems a bit expensive for a '66?
I'll agree that the M4 looks/is a more special car, so it depends what you want from it really, mine's a daily driver. An M4 at that price will be a chunk older with a lot higher mileage. Really happy (so far!) with my 240 though, that engine is a peach.
I thought it was expensive too, definitely not a high spec. I'll agree that the M4 looks/is a more special car, so it depends what you want from it really, mine's a daily driver. Milage doesn't usually put me off a car, as long as it's been maintained and the proof is there (I like paperwork, receipts etc). I'm not saying I'd buy an M4 with over 100,000 miles ( I think there was one for sale not too long ago with 113,000 miles and it was up for around £18,000). But I wouldn't be put off an M4 with around circa 50k/60k miles. They seem to be around the £23-24k mark. To be honest, I'm happy to pay that given I'd be dumping a bit of money into an M140/240 to sort out the handling etc.

I've had my Golf R estate for 18 months now and it's definitely dull coming from an ST! Remapping helped, I'm getting PS5s and a fast road setup done next week which will hopefully help! I don't think it needs more power especially, it's already rapid and only really tails off well past the speed limit

There's rapid, then there's fast. Interesting thread brought back to life...
Have you bought anything yet?
Just got into a stage 2 140i and its bonkers i really think its quicker than an f10 m5 i had a few years back... Infact im pretty sure it is...
No LSD which it clearly needs so im looking at adding one fairly soon..
Seen someone mention that a 450bhp 1 series is too quick for uk roads and id have to agree... You have to be on the ball in these once fettled ( and ive had lots of quick rwd cars prior including an lci m135i various mapped 35ds, e46 m3s for reference )
i did consider the golf and on a british road in anything but a dry summers day the golf would be gone but wheres the fun in that?

Perhaps you should write to BMW, Audi, Ferrari et al and ask them to cap their top models at 450bhp then? Or is it the case as with so many heavily tuned RWD cars, the suspension and brakes, rear tyres and steering are easily overwhelmed by the extra power the car wasn't designed to cope with?
Great fun though!
