If the seller doesn't get upset at your first offer then it was too high.

His mistake was getting upset at an offer.

Your mistake was walking away when you could have swallowed your pride and milked it to get a good price.

I thought forecourts were shut and it was click and collect only. I know you can have a wander around a forecourt and probably wont get told to bugger off, but this sounds more like a traditional non-lockdown transaction?

I don’t think it was the offer you made which made the salesman irate, but your awful tumblr tier baby talk.

P.S. does anybody believe this actually happened?

With no counter offer presented then walking away is the only option. Of course £2k off is unrealistic but as an opening offer its perfectly acceptable although nowadays many dealers will not negotiate at all, IMO that's not how the game is played and they don't get to change the rules. Negotiating is all part and parcel of buying cars and always has been but many people either don't like doing it or aren't very good that's why sites like Carwow exist.

I would expect maybe 500 -750 off a car that value depending on how well it's priced.

In the OPs situation I would have pointed out that the wheels require refurbishment (£350) and tyres need doing (£350) and Brakes need replacing (£250) and perhaps offered just under asking price with the above work to be completed as part of the deal.

That is assuming the tyres, brakes and wheels were shot and actually needed doing as opposed to making it like new.
If you're in a Mercedes dealer you're entitled to use the prices a Mercedes dealer would charge. That work is there or therabouts £2K.

I do know I've never been asked to leave any premises ever.
Can't say I have either, I must have lived a very sheltered life laugh
Years ago I visited our local Cheshire county town VW dealer and, when I mentioned discussing the price was told "I don't think we'll able to do business today, sir" and was gently guided towards the door!

I was telling a colleague who lives in Staffs and exactly the same thing happened to him at his local VW dealer.

My logic exactly. From the consumers point of view they are offloading a car needing loads of work done to it. Perhaps it’s for the best that I didn’t buy it as perhaps the previous owner ran it into the ground.

I will phone the salesman back and give him a chance but I would need to be really impressed to buy it.

Interesting viewpoint considering how many posts we see on these pages with people rightly getting narked off at chancers texting/messaging them with stupid offers on private sale purchases

i.e - car for sale at £10k

"Hey bruv, will you take £5k and a PS2? Best offer innit"

Your first offer has to be pitched correctly as you can always offer more from that point, but never less. However, it needs to be sensible.

If I was a dealer, I'd be annoyed at a customer offering £14k on a £16k car having spent over an hour with them. But then I wouldn't market a car blatantly needing tyres, brakes, etc.

The most amazing part of the story is that the salesman followed up with you. I'd almost be suspicious about that.

You spent 1hr 20mins talking to this guy already, don't waste his time! He had to do the follow up call as a formality and in order to tick a box in order to please his employer. Go and find a decent one with history for £15,000 and forget about this crap car!

I think what you've got to understand is that COVID is creating havoc for society today, especially for retailers. For the dealership to entertain you for 1.5 hours, they've screened and qualified you as a potential sale before going through the rigamarole of PPE, social distancing, wiping down surfaces, preparing the car for a test drive etc. The salesman's immediate response was a reflection of his disappointment having gone through all of the palavers, and the fact that you were asked to leave is perhaps more a reflection on you than the dealership. Car dealerships do not ask prospective punters to leave unless you've really pissed them off.

Rather than offering charity to the salesman, perhaps it would be best if you don't wind them up any more and buy your car elsewhere.

Couldnt agree more Dave but this is exactly what the OP wrote in his opening post

"I went out to buy a Mercedes A180cdi recently "

Its specific enough for me to believe that he knows there is a difference between the models it isn't a typo if you are not 100% on the model of car you are going to drop £15k on he would have said A class merc or A180 diesel

That's pretty thin......Perhaps I'm wrong but I'm seeing nothing particularly troll-evident.

I of course could also be wrong but it is odd to state a pretty specific model, of which there are none at the price stated, spend over 1hr talking to a salesman to then low ball him , oh and that's before the OP is contemplating buying a £15k car with no history and a few annoying defects of which there are 100's for sale across the country!

I am not sure why I care so much tbh but it just doesn't add up to me!

Apologies OP if you are genuine!

I think the OP may have been slightly out of order but just as likely to have been misunderstood. The salesman seems to have taken things a bit too personally for me.

But there is something more important than the pursuit of an old Mercedes and the attitude of a salesman
And it's something that many posters have touched upon:

Communication

Communication is important at every level. And an important part of communication are facial expressions
How can we totally understand someones intent if we can't see their face fully
And the reason for that is mask wearing.
Whats the betting that a deal could have been done between these 2 people if they had been able to see each others faces clearly

Thank you for your time gentlemen

Imagine seeing that a dealer was willing to sell a car with two bald tyres, another tyre with a nail in it and lipped brake discs and still thinking it was worth making an offer on the car... Must be a rare care to be worth risking other unseen issues and parting with your hard earned cash.

Wait, it's a bottom of the range A class that are ten a penny? Madness.
