Hi, I’m looking to buy a Porsche Cayman, either 987.2 or possibly a 981.
My thoughts are a nice 987.2 for about £20k, HP over 5 years probably sell and upgrade after 3 but will have some equity to do it, are there any horror stories about these or are they good for 60-70k miles??
Or a 2015 981 on a PCP but will be more expensive and wont have as much for the next car!
Any experiences with these? Any help appreciated! Thanks kris

The 981 is a much better car in all aspects, better interior, looks, drive and reliability.

Have you found a PCP on a 2015 Cayman? I thought it was difficult to pcp over 5 years old? Just be careful of the total charges payable would expect it to be around £5/6k interest on a PCP like that!

I bought my 2.9 987.2 last July and it's been great and is used as a daily driver. I paid just a smidge over £16.5 for mine which was a 2010 car with 69k on it and FSH.

Mine's a manual (I didn't fancy the LDK button arrangement) as it will spend some time on track.

I did have one major issue this year, 1st day back after Christmas and the gear linkage cable broke, which apparently is very common (a case of when, not if) that set me back £800 to get resolved, but was done so with upgraded parts (which are now standard) so shouldn't ever happen again.

Other than that I love it and won't sell it any time soon, would probably replace it with a 981 when the time comes, though I would ideally prefer an Evora.

I thought the 981 would be better, it’s just getting a one with a good finance deal, I have a contact which can PCP up to 9 years old

What sort of MPG do you get daily driving?
987.2 looks appealing as it would set me up for something better in the future, it’s just a bit worrying daily driving a 9-10 year old car, I’ve seen a company which will do a warranty for major parts, I’ve seen a couple with about 50k miles for £20k ish, they seem to be holding their value really well now

I'm averaging 25mpg, that's with the daily slog to work and back (6-7 miles each way) and being a bit spirited for the last mile or so on most days. From what I've read, once warm the engines do like to be revved and when you do the car comes alive. I've had no problems at all except for the gear linkage cable and from what I've read that's the only Achilles heal on 987.2, unlike the 987.1 which has a couple of things that could cause concern. This is exactly why I went for the 987.2 with 2.9 rather than a 987.1 Cayman S. Because lets be honest, in real world driving I'm no going to notice a quicker 0-60 of .3 seconds or whatever or the top speed difference of 10 mph'ish.

Another reason that the 987.2 2.9 is probably a good shout is the steering, the 981 is the newer car with all the tech improvements that go with it, but I have heard with electronics steering it does "lose something".

I found this in another Cayman thread, which if you haven't read, is pretty good.

I had a 987.2 pdk S from new for almost 6 years and put nearly 80k on it as a daily driver. Costs wise outside of standard servicing it let all its aircon fluid go once, threw its drive belt and the wheel arch lining on the front passenger side came down and that’s about it. Would do just over 30 on a long run and about 20 around town.

It also survived a trip off the road through a fence into a field but that’s another story hehe never recorded as it wasn’t written off.

I would try to have a decent drive in both to compare. I changed from a 987.2 manual to a 981 pdk 18 months ago. The 981 is a much more refined car but I find the electric steering dull and heavy. Might not bother a lot of people but it really irks me having driven Lotuses since 1975. The judder on low speed full lock also seems more pronounced on the 981 to me.

That judder is something I'd never experienced before I got my 987.2, when it first happened I was convinced the car was broken in some way! It's un-nerving if you don't know about it.

Owned a 987 2.9 and went to a 981. We had an S with a PDK, it was a great car and really nicely put together. Whilst the 987 feels more pure, the 981 felt better for a daily. Interior was also a major step forward..
