I bought one without doing either and it has been fine. 987.1 3.2. I paid 8500 for it.
It's a cracking car for the money, but with all due respect what your experience with your car is not that relevant. It is an issue with a significant minority of cars with that engine.
True, but having owned many porsches I believed it to be a calculated gamble on an issue that actually seems to be fairly low numbers. If you buy well enough you can have the IMS done and a bore scope is easily done. Many cars have been sorted. I will do the IMS when I do the clutch.
Boxster S is about one of the best cars you can buy as a fun car regardless of price, plus they are appreciating too.

Bore scoring on a 3.2 is a non issue.
If the IMS has not gone or doesn't have any play in it now then forget about it and enjoy it.

You don't need to spend £10k either.

I bought this one with 93k on it last summer for £4800.

I then put in a new Pioneer Carplay/Dab unit, new dampers, springs, bump stops, top mounts and drop links up front so it feels like new again.
MK2 hood with heated glass screen fitted.
Sorted out a couple of niggles like door lock actuators (windows not dropping when handle pulled) cleared drain plugs, new PS4 tyres and Hunter 4 wheel alignment and it genuinely does drive like a car 1/4 of its age and mileage.

It owes me around £7k.

The car I bought had a new clutch rms and ims seals fitted at 90k miles and the IMS was inspected, there was absolutely zero play in it and still looked great, so why change it? It is a good bearing.
Change it for what? Change it for an LM bearing for £1000 that could still let go.

Things to do...

Wheel refurb £250.
Rear Bilstein B4 dampers - £350 (rears are fine still but nice to have matching all round)
Refinish seats - £60 Furniture Clinic kit. They will look like new, factory matte finish.

That's it.

I have owned some nice cars over the years, and the 986 Boxster really does offer something that is lacking in so many modern cars, it still feels very mechanical, but at the same time is amazingly comfortable when just pootling along. The steering and overall feel is just so right and so much fun, jump into a modern version and it has definitely lost something.

Problem is, I am now hankering after a 996 911, but it has stopped me looking at new Caymans and 911s, which I guess is a good thing.

Yeah as mentioned previously my mum had one for 6 years and she loved it, i only drove it once and have no memory of it to be honest. Im just concerned as I loved the GT86 and how light it was, going to a heavy punchy car on british roads im not too sure of (though i love the interior and exterior looks). Im also very very concerned about the way the gov is clamping down on such cars and being stuck with a 10k paperweight in a couple of years time, which is actually my biggest issue with buying one to be honest
The only thing the government is concerned about is Euro ratings as that's how ULEZ's will be implemented so don't worry about that.

The shift isn't bad I'd say average, the GT86 is lighter but you have to drive around the flat spot that's irritating in normal driving, you can make pace but in a different the good thing about the 370 is that you can make it sharper but I'd say leave it for a bit & enjoy it.

The newer Z4 is a good car a nice convertible & an enjoyable car but not as sweet a steer as the 370/GT86, like most cars they're fun in different ways.

TVR Chimaera, there really isn't another answer for that price range.

Yeah the flat spot ruined the gt86 for me, I’d consider the 370z, I’m just unsure if i would get the value out of it that it costs over a fiesta ST, that straight line speed is mostly unusable, but obviously it wins hands downs on looks...

The 370Z isn't just about straight line speed they corner well too & like the 86 it can be made sharper too, the Fiesta is a great steer & a ball of fun but the 370Z has layers too.

Test drive one you may well be surprised.
