Totally ignoring the R26 which is a far better car than anything you are considering?

That may be the case but they're not the most reliable of cars from what ive seen.

you could always look a a skoda octavia vrs diesel, i haven't heard anything too bad about them and fuel costs are gonna be a lot better than others on the list. Remap quite strong if you want more power and its possible you may be able to squeeze the newer shape in budget too

I would like to try an 130i. For a bmw they do seem nice and uncomplicated. And quite sturdy and well built- i may be wrong! Rwd is also appealing. Its just finding one to try! Autos are just slightly more common but majority are high very high mileage autos.

Trying one just now might be difficult.

Not sure what you think of as high mileage though. My current 330i has done almost 115K miles and it's predecessor 325i had done 139K when I sold it.

Both have the N52 engine and drove really well - I'd focus more on condition and history than mileage with these. But avoid an Auto!

Yes trying anything now is proving tricky but I think i have narrowed it down to three very different cars.
The 130i, FN2 and CR-Z (quite like the earlier A3s and Scirocco too) - Yes a very weird selection but i seem to constantly come back to these. I do like Hondas but those 1 series are enough to tempt me away.
The 130i though i think has peaked my interest but they are very tricky to get hold of. The same reason why i stopped looking for Preludes. Although i see enough 130s driving around.
I have seen one for sale not a million miles away from me but i think arranging test drives with places is difficult.
Im not overly knowledgeable on these and the N52 - they dont seem to have any major faults but am i right in thinking they are slightly prone to oil leaks?

Had mine for 4 years and 30k miles. Hacked around tracks and the 'Ring. Had to replace tyres, brakes amd a headlight levelling sensor. It's been about as reliable as cars get.

It has been so good that 3 friends bought them for track cars too and the only trouble any of them has had was when pushing 330bhp.

Having owned a 130i that ended up having vanos issues, leading to a cracked head and a scrapped car I'm surprised you think this would be a good ownership proposition over a Megane which I have had no trouble with at all.

Each to their own. Good luck.

And I’m sure there is someone somewhere with the opposite story. Using one example is hardly conclusive evidence that you should steer clear of them.

Likewise the Megane. I can tell you of 1st hand experience of 4 people out of 5 that have had no issues with their R26. The unlucky one had to have an engine rebuild.

I can tell of first hand experience of 1 out of 2 having issues with theirr 130i but not just issues ,issues that constituted scrapping the car as the engines are expensive to rebuild.

The R26 is a very capable car. When I got mine I had to spend a bit of money on getting it up to scratch, because of previous owners neglect. Cambelt, tires, driveshaft and wishbone bushes. After that I never had a problem with it. They are a little fragile, but they are getting on now, so its notreally surprising considering what they are capable of.

I got rid of mine because I found it too good on the road. You had to be carrying some pace to make it engaging. Saying that it was wicked fun, but mostly above speed limits.
