What fuel? We will take the wood or coal by Jeep and will cut the peat and dry it out ourselves. No commercial deliveries would get within 2 miles of here other than by boat.
Is cutting peat still acceptable?
Much of the North of Scotland is a peat bog, increasing apparently as less cut it and remove it for fuel https://www.scottishfield.co.uk/outdoors/wildlifea...

As a kid I cut many peats during Easter holidays with my Gran, Aunts and Uncles in Lewis, then back in Summer to take them home with a ride on the tractor. Great fun, and you can't beat the smell of a peat fire.

Just watch out for Greta arriving in her kayak to give you a telling off.

Downsides. Horrible access road. It rains a lot here. Not much to do for younger people. No cinema. Night club. Swimming pool. Shops are many miles away. Etc.
But then I've paid similar money to my neighbours new sun lounge and patio!!
Looks absolutely stunning, rather jealous now - and a reason to go car shopping so a win win

There's a lot of fiction in that article, not least the nonsense about deer.

Great thread, enjoyable reading!

Only question I have is how do the likes of the contractors who fitted the new kitchen etc get up with the new units?

There must be fields which once permission is granted all the materials could be taken up there - with tools - then drove to base of that rock face and hike up and down it daily as you install the kit.

I doubt OP would be driving up and down that road to get groceries (Mike and loaf of bread say) rather a lovely walk which encompasses passing the corner shop, or he leaves a big end of his rock face and they drop it off in the box then hike back up with it. Be careful with eggs though they break over bruising wink.

Much of the Highlands and Islands is moorland - there are no 'fields' as such in huge areas of the North.

The most recent work was done with materials taken in by boat.
The poster who said people are finding fault where there is none is right. 40 grand for a 3 bedroom house and half an acre of land will never come with all the trimmings. Obviously. Even as it stands this house would be over a million pounds in Chelsea near the Thames. Surrounded by filth and pollution and crime and traffic jams.
The price includes a byre and 3 small solar panels. Diesel generator. Loft boarded out also. Great buy.

Where did you stay?
Just near Carbost / Fernilea smile

Was fantastic, not been for almost 18 years. Hadn't changed as much as I'd heard (although this was probably because it was still quiet)

Near here then where we are tonight for dinner!

I am very jealous - well done!

I would love an off grid cabin away from it all.

Thanks. It wouldn't suit everyone. But I'm semi retiring next year and am looking forward to having some time away from crowds, traffic and hassles.
It's going to come with challenges. For example it gets very windy here often. Very wet too. But it's money you could lose in a year on a big luxury saloon car so I'll go for it.

I will later on. When signed and sealed.
It's not that exciting to look at though.

Been watching this thread but haven’t commented. OP I am extremely jealous, that looks like an absolutely fantastic place and I’d certainly be more than happy to just bugger off up there and live full time, well away from any horrible city.

I wish you much happiness and hope you enjoy it thumbup

Some pics of the house would be lovely too if you are happy to share (though I understand why you might not).
