Good evening all,

My father-in-law who’s in his 60s is in the market for a new car on PCP. Please could you recommend something? The criteria is as follows:

- Petrol (including mild hybrid)
- Auto
- Least powerful engine possible
- Front wheel drive
- Raised ride height preferable but not essential
- 5 doors
- Reasonably sized boot and room for 2 kids in the back
- Cloth or only part leather seats
- Decent sat nav built in
- Automated tailgate, folding mirrors
- Heated seats
- Not an Audi, BMW, Ford or Mini
- Under £40k
- Suitable for his persona (not unduly youthful, feminine or boy racery)
- EDIT: Also, must have electronic handbrake.

Obvious question, but why doesn't he buy your nearly new Q3 from you.

2 birds with 1 stone, etc.

Isn’t that what the OP is helping with? Looking for ideas that fit his criteria…

He already has a Q3 (the old one) and doesn’t want another Audi (I said not Audi in the criteria).

Skoda Kamiq, Kodiaq, Karoq. One of those will suit his needs

How about a Lexus UX. quirky / different and meets most of the criteria except boot is a bit small.

It'll be reliable, economical and dealers seem good to deal with.

Volvo XC40 T3 Auto Inscription or Mazda CX-5 in 2l petrol Sport / GT Sport spec would tick all of those boxes.

Your FIL is of course entitled to buy whatever car suits his needs. However, does anyone else feel that this type of purchase is what inflates car prices for the rest of us? He wants a non-premium branded jacked up hatchback with the smallest engine possible and yet he’s prepared to spend £40grand? I’ve got no hope!

No £40k is a ceiling, not a target. And he hasn’t ruled out all premium brands, just the ones I mentioned.

A bit OAP pehaps, but a mercedes B class has a lovely interior and drives really well
The B200 being the engine i would recommend

Alternatively a Skoda Karoq in SEL trim is an excellent all rounder

My shout, and it's a hell of a criteria. An old sales manager called this 'trying to arrange a meal for 20 people, and keep them all happy'

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202105182...

Petrol, yep
Auto, yep
FWD, nope, 4WD
Raised ride height, yep
Good boot, room for kids, yep
Cloth or only part leather. Yes and no. IIRC R-Design uses a neoprene type material (like wet-suits) which the rain drops absorbed in one pic backs up. Volvo also offer a largely cloth option on these.
Decent sat nav, yep
Powerfold mirrors, electric tailgate. The former, I'd be gobsmacked if not, the latter would need checking. Volvo must offer
Heated seats, yep
Not an Audi, BMW, Ford or Mini, yep
Under £40k, yep
Suitable for his persona (not unduly youthful, feminine or boy racery) IMO, yep
EDIT: Also, must have electronic handbrake. Yep

I had a very similar request from my FIL back in March. His requirements were the same except he also requested low running costs. The Skoda Kamiq 1.0 DSG SEL came out favourite and Zen Leasing had a special offer on a 36 month lease which has a TCO of £7,110 for 3 years plus 1 service at £150-£200. All he has to do is add fuel and insurance.

- Petrol (including mild hybrid) - Petrol and very economical
- Auto - Yes
- Least powerful engine possible - Yes but he doesn't find it under powered
- Front wheel drive - Yes
- Raised ride height preferable but not essential - Raised height which makes it easier for him to access and exit
- 5 doors - Yes
- Reasonably sized boot and room for 2 kids in the back - Yes, will accommodate 4 adults with ease - 5 but its a little cosy
- Cloth or only part leather seats - Cloth with part leather
- Decent sat nav built in - Yes
- Automated tailgate, folding mirrors - Yes
- Heated seats - Yes
- Not an Audi, BMW, Ford or Mini - Box ticked
- Under £40k - Given the total lease cost doesn't even cover the depreciated if he paid cash, he opted for the lease
- Suitable for his persona (not unduly youthful, feminine or boy racery) - He believes so
- EDIT: Also, must have electronic handbrake. - Can't remember

Tell your FIL to buy a nearly new/a year old car he'll get much better value, also a personal loan may well workout the more financially astute choice.

It sounds like a Kia XCeed First Edition in Petrol or PHEV form is the pick & the fact you can get them well under budget with the 7 Year Warranty is the cherry on top.
