So OP any of the above suggestions work for you?
Yeah he likes the Hyundai Kona, Kia Stonic, Mazda CX-5, and the VW/SEAT offerings. Was going to look at them this weekend but gonna make the most of the heatwave instead, and will look asap thereafter. Appreciate all the help.

As someone of a similar age to your FIL, and based in his requirements (not dissimilar to what I will be looking for at some stage in the future) - I think I would go for the Kia X Ceed to be fair.

I think the Stonic and Kona are a tad small and the proportions look wrong to me.

Thanks, I’ll draw emphasis to that one for him.

My shout, and it's a hell of a criteria. An old sales manager called this 'trying to arrange a meal for 20 people, and keep them all happy'

Petrol, yep
Auto, yep
FWD, nope, 4WD
Raised ride height, yep
Good boot, room for kids, yep
Cloth or only part leather. Yes and no. IIRC R-Design uses a neoprene type material (like wet-suits) which the rain drops absorbed in one pic backs up. Volvo also offer a largely cloth option on these.
Decent sat nav, yep
Powerfold mirrors, electric tailgate. The former, I'd be gobsmacked if not, the latter would need checking. Volvo must offer
Heated seats, yep
Not an Audi, BMW, Ford or Mini, yep
Under £40k, yep
Suitable for his persona (not unduly youthful, feminine or boy racery) IMO, yep
EDIT: Also, must have electronic handbrake. Yep
Not sure if serious.

Why? It meets 12 out of his 14 criteria. Got a better suggestion?

The new Mercedes GLA fits the bill, and is a massive improvement on the model it replaces. Now looks like a slightly smaller GLC, which is no bad thing.

What is the first criterion?

Then a petrol example, an oversight.

UPDATE

So I took my FIL car shopping yesterday. Very productive day. We’ve narrowed it down to 4 cars. (Ford is no longer off the table, and he’s ruled out some of the smaller crossovers like T-Roc as they just seemed tiny and pointless). These are the cars in order of his preference. Please could you give your views on which car is the pick of this list? There’s a particular emphasis on comfort I.e. a comfortable drivers seat and driving position.

They are all new cars (we are not considering used)

1. Ford Kuga - we both loved this car, it was very impressive.
2. Kia Niro - he really likes this but I think it’s kinda small and a bit weird.
3. Seat Ateca - he really likes it but to me it looks like a low budget version of the Q3
4. Hyundai Tucson - he’s concerned this is too big for him and will be difficult to park

Surely he should just get the Kuga?

It’s top of his list…

Only he will know what is or isn't comfortable.

Just wondered if anyone had any pearls of wisdom or words of caution about any of these cars?

Does he want a suitable car/deal?

Or is he more concerned about what his neighbours think?

Why not the Kuga then?

He doesn’t care what the neighbours think.

My suspicion is he’s mostly drawn to the Kia Niro which IMO seems a bit crap compared to the other ones. Oh well, I suspect it’ll all come down to what’s cheapest in the end.

I did look at the Carwow review which said the Kia was uncomfortable - I’ll bring that to his attention.

Niro feels a lot smaller than the Ateca when I test drove them, but plug-in hybrid did 70mpg without even trying!

Ateca is the best driver's car out of the these 4 including the Kuga.

If it were my choice, I'd go XC40 though.

But you've been car shopping and looked/drove a Niro, so he will already know if it's comfortable or not.

From your list the Ford Kuga is the pick, they're great cars & you can get some great deals on a lightly used one.

Did you take a look at the Kia XCeed?

As that's the one that I think really ticks all the boxes & it's a better car than the Niro:
