Best family car for reliability + MPG?
Discussion
Trying to help my father pick a new car but hitting a bit of a brick wall.
His only requests were:
> It’s able to fit 4 people and has good luggage space (can be any shape, but not too small)
> Is reliable and comfortable
> Does good on fuel (petrol or diesel only)
> Upwards of a 14 plate
> Under 8k price range and under 70,000 miles preferably
I’ve said about a Skoda Rapid Spaceback and an earlier Honda Civic which he’s taking a liking to, but he wants me to try and explore down all the valleys (dealerships and websites that is )
What do you all reckon would be a good daily mile muncher that meets some or all of the above?

A smidgen over budget, but what about something like this Mondeo. Unlike a Civic or the Skoda you’d be able to fit four adults in without having to amputate various limbs. You could get something with similar mileage for under £8k but it’ll be poverty spec. I’d be very happy to do big miles in something like this.

Same badge as the Mondeo suggested above, but slightly smaller vehicle if a Mondeo is considered too big - they are physically huge cars.
2nd generation facelifted CMax in Titanium or Titanium X spec. Facelift is most easily identified by the bigger Aston Martin lookalike grille.
Or if Mondeo is considered a goer then also consider last of the line Mk4.5 Mondeo in Titanium X spec. These went up to 2014.

If you want ample space for four adults & luggage I'd say look at Mondeo sized cars because Focus sized cars are a bit compromised & older adults will want easy access. His only requests were:

The Mondeo is the pick but there are some very good alternative that'll mean your dad gets a nicer lower mileage car for his budget without compromising on reliability.

The Mondeo in Titanium X Sport spec is a great pick but you do have to compromise a bit with your budget:

Or spend a little more & get a newer shape but lower spec Mondeo Titanium:

Leftfield
Infiniti M 3.5h a proper luxobarge very reliable & servicing at Nissan is sensible but the boot is a compromise as that's where the batteries are, spec/fit & finish may sway your dad & friends to travel a bit lighter.
