I have been scanning sites or a few good dealers whom I know, trust and have dealt with. Their cars are usually ex- main dealer FSH , few owners, etc yet they appear silly money’ We are talking 2014/15 stuff - all good runarounds but really far from new. Are there no offers on new? As a PH I’m not usually in the new market, and yet......

Few things going on IMO:

- people that have cars like that already probably don’t feel compelled to change, particularly as a new equivalent will have £145 VED when their old one may be low or zero.

- the push for electrification may also mean they’ll hold on to what they have for a bit longer until they feel it’s better to buy an EV

- fleet average CO2 makes small simple cars more expensive if the manufacturer isn’t doing enough low CO2 sales elsewhere.

- people who need to get to work have been buying more cars instead of using public transport and that’s a popular category for a second runabout

- London ULEZ expansion in October and similar clean air zones elsewhere has pushed lots of people to change from older cars. Again, popular category for city dwellers wanting a runabout.

Try looking for a small automatic car, the prices are even more ridiculous.

2010 pensioner spec Renault Clio in beige on beige, £4,495

2011 Mercedes E350 Cdi £4,750

Now I know the Mercedes has done 130K miles, but which would you rather buy?

I recently bought a new Mini for £16.5. 4 month lead time and certain options unavailable due to chip shortage.

Best used one I could find with similar spec was £13.5k and that was 2 years old with 18k on the clock
