Been quiet on here lately but did have a look back at these. All good suggestions but I can’t help thinking 90 odd miles of M4 would drag a bit in a small engined golf.

At the moment I’m thinking E350 cdi coupe for 10k, a sea sucker mount kit for 350 and save the 4650 towards something else. Mainly as it will probably be 2 days a week to start with. Possibly staying overnight nearby, will see how it goes.

Oh and I got the job!

The E350cdi is a good car & you'll get a nice one for 10k.

You could probably get a reasonable mk7 golf, comes with adaptive cruise as standard (apart from the really boggo spec "S") which would be really nice on this journey.

OP - I have a similar commute over 3 days, mostly motorways. I was doing that in a MK7.5 golf GTE, nice car but a small engine grates after a while at 70-80mph.
Hence when that went back last Feb, I changed for a E350cdi coupe. Great car, solid, well built with a silky smooth diesel. You will average over 40mpg.

Funnily enough that second one at Avanti is about 10 minutes from my flat. I think I’ll venture down and have a look. I know they’ve had it a while but it looks like a nice example on the surface. Ideally I’d like a facelift with the 7G gearbox but I can’t really justify the price hike for one over the pre facelift really. PFL will do for a year - 18 months while I see what’s what with that and extra travel and go from there.

All E350cdi's come with the 7 speed box some of the very late ones come with the 9 speed but you're looking at a budget jump.

Ah it’ll be the 9 speed then. The mpg goes up a fair bit and the performance is better. Engine is slightly revised as well to give some more power but as you say, a budget jump I can’t really justify at the moment.

Thread update. I’ve actually bought something. Pick it up tomorrow.

2014 CLS 250CDI with the AMG stuff on it. Looked at a couple with the 350 but given the fuel prices and usage of the car the 250 was fine. The mileage and history is good and it was in nice condition. Plus it was a case of needs must given I start a week on Friday and am away next weekend.

The engine isn’t anywhere near as rattly as people on the internet claim. I actually liked it a lot. Need to sort some roof bars for it for the bike and it’ll be perfect for what I want.

I’ve also kept the ep3 - it will become a track project.
