4wd SUV/Estate
Discussion
After our Legacy fell victim to a HGV last year we replaced it with a 2018 Outback paid 18k last year for a facelift model with 50k on the clock, it's just a really nice place to be, big airy cabin, good visibility, huge boot with flat load space.
MPG is ok for a big car and has the advantage of good ground clearance, not tested it properly on winter tyres yet but Legacy was great. Prices do seem to have gone through the roof in the last 12 months though.

I've always had winter tyres which have been ok but at the minute I need to be 100% sure I can get to hospital when needed. 4wd and winters are just that bit better
Yup, never understood those who proclaim that a FWD car on winters is fine then post up clips of a FWD on winters vs a AWD on summers. Great, now go stick winters on the AWD and try again. So I agree, winters make a massive difference to any car, but winters plus AWD is as you say, just better. I was looking at one for the Mrs (LPG variant) and a set of Cross Climates or winters - except we need towing capacity

Thanks for the suggestions
I had a Golf R Hatchback as a company car a few years back. . Liked the car but did always have a concern over theft etc. That said would be an interesting choice!
Not thought about the Peugeot, that looks a nice place to sit. I'll have a read up on the 4wd system as I'm keen that it works well for my needs. My old Nissan Xtrail (previous shape) was awesome in snow. My 3 series BMW x drive on winters was average at best.

Comedy post of the year (you didn't actually watch the video)
I did and many others like it and there's still many who will proclaim that you don't need winter tyres, just drive to the conditions and others who feel that AWD is all you need to stop you becoming a 2 ton sledge... and there are people who claim that sticking winters on the front of their FWD car is sufficient. I'm aware AWD and winters offer the best chance, as per the video... but somebody said that really, a FWD on winters is enough. I'm agreeing with the OP and the video that AWD on winters is just more than enough. Maybe I missed something. Thanks all for the suggestions - loads of great ideas
I'm leaning towards a petrol Subaru Forrester but having had a good trawl through auto trader they are in fairly short supply for the age im looking at
Widening the search for other cars mentioned , there are actually very few cars within a reasonable distance within budget that are not stupidly overpriced.
I guess I'm looking for a 4wd at exactly the wrong time of year in a hot market. Who would have thought it would be a challenge
I will look again today - I usually travel for a car (last one was Glasgow) but logistically I can't do that at the minute

Maybe I'm not searching correctly though
I picked up this Subaru XV a few months ago to use for work and get me through the winter up here in Scotland instead of using my 640d GC. So far I've had no snow so a bit gutted. Permanent AWD and auto. Seems robust and its the 2.0i non turbo boxer so simple and reliable hopefully. Decent boot too and I think it looks pretty good in the burgundy purple colour. I do like it and it's the first SUV type vehicle I have had. Will probably hold onto it long term.

That looks good. The Forrester, Outback or XV would all be good options if I can find one in a reasonable distance Gassing Station | Car Buying | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
