Edit

So the Toyota has been ruled at as someone mentioned to tight in the back

Has anyone run any of the usual suspects?

Afternoon all occasionally poster regular lurker.

I find my self with a nice problem that I’m hoping the people of PH can help me with.

Looking for a nice reasonably quick car around the 15k mark there is some flexibility and I haven’t ruled out older “cheaper” car with a bit in the pot for unforeseen maintenance.

Needs to be

4 seater+ as I have a lanky 11 year old + the OH.
Quicker than than previous A5,40,190 bhp.
Not too stiff a ride as it’ll be my daily.

Other than that it’s flexible open to 2,3,5 door, coupe, hatch or salon.

Usual suspects at the moment

BMW m135i
VW Golf gti/R
FORD focus ST
Renault Megane RS
Toyota GT86

Leased A5,40,black edition ended 2 months ago I’ve got a 19 year old Mitsubishi l200 for my daily at the moment so running cost not an issue ??

If you don't mind an auto, you could get a Mercedes C55 or CLK55 AMG, or a Lexus ISF. £15k is on the cusp of BMW E46 M3 and not far off the E90s.

I'd say that a Astra GTC VXR will tick a lot of your boxes they're slightly softer than the Cup Chassis Megane's so daily usage isn't to stiff an affair & then when you want to wring it's neck it's a willing composed companion:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202112310...

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202112030...

The other hot hatch I'd have a good look at is the 308 PS GTI 270:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202112030...

If you fancy a swift smart handling coupe then there are a few options.

G37 S

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202107285...

E500 Sport

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202201071...

235i M Sport but these might be too small in terms of interior space:

Maserati GranSport nowhere near sensible but it'll make you smile:

Insignia VXR

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202201061...

C63 it'll involve some haggling & taking a high mileage one BUT these are great cars & they're reliable too, as for the fuel consumption look on the bright side you'll be upping your Nectar points wink

I have had the Golf Mk7 Gti which is a lovely thing, technical masterpiece and can carry real speed over most terrain but is a little cold and uninvolving. Can carry 4 in relative comfort, if your boy is tall and misses short it will work.

I have also had the M135i which is also a lovely thing, amazing drive train, great noise, more work from the driver to carry the speed on a B road than the Golf and but that's a good thing. You will not get your boy in the back, its tiny. The M235i has the same problem.

An alternative to the Golf is the Skoda Octavia VRS, more or less the same thing just slightly bigger.

An alternative to the M135i is the 335i same as the Skoda, just a bit more space in the car for carrying taller folk.

I like auto to be honest. Now the m3 would be the car I’ve always fancied being a child of the 80s. The ISF is interesting I’m guessing bullet proof

I had a Focus ST and then traded it in for an M140i. The Focus is a really great car but the BM is on another level in terms of performance, driver focus and refinement. Size wise we can fit in our family of five (7 year old on a booster, 16 year old and lanky 12 year old) without issue.

The ep3 which I love the look off gets a bad press less powerful and less tec compared to the fn2 which I like but fear it will miss the mod cons inside.
