My daily has just gone kaput, and my FiL no longer drives. His car is still MOT’d and I might be able to acquire it as a stop gap.
Thing is, he has no idea where the V5 is and it may even be in his (deceased) wife’s name.
I could “buy” the car with no V5 no worries, and apply for a replacement. But could I tax it to drive it away?
I’m assuming I’d have to wait for a replacement (even to transfer ownership online?) and couldn’t therefore tax and use the car straight away in my name. Leaving it in his name might be an option, but I’m particularly interested in whether I can transfer ownership and tax it quickly.

Thanks.

Personally I would send an application for a new V5 and just drive it. Once the new V5 comes just tax it from the beginning of this month. I'm not saying that is the correct option but it's the least inconvenient. Mind you, I live in Cornwall and driving around a city might result in your triggering NPR somewhere? You can't even tax online without the V5 document number. frown

When you apply for V5 with V62 at post office.
They let you tax it there

You are conflating ownership and keepership.

Ownership will transfer to you at the moment you pay your FIL the money for the car.

The car will remain taxed (by your FIL) until such time that DVLA are notified of change of keeper. Once you are the new RK, the FIL's current tax is cancelled and you'll have an obligation to tax the car yourself.

That being the case, the car can continue to be driven by you for the short period of time that the car is still registered to your FIL, until DLVA change RK to yourself.

PS - make sure that your insurance knows that you are not yet RK of the car, as some insurers may want to know if the owner is not the same as keeper.

Yes you’re quite right. I was aware but was typing hastily! Thanks, particularly for the reminder that yes I could use it while awaiting the V5 and the importance of getting the insurance right thumbup

This - had to do it with a car last year. Actually a pretty straightforward process but I can imagine some post offices will look at you blankly if you ask for it. I got lucky and the fella knew exactly what was needed.
