Afternoon all,

To be blunt, all this talk of electric cars etc has me craving more and more moving some savings into some metal!

I have around a 15K budget, running costs arent really a concern as it will be more of a weekend car so low miles but nothing temperamental that has me worried every time i drive it.
I do have a littlen (<1 year old) so i reckon a saloon would be the best shout, here are some of the cars ive looked at recently to fill the bill

I dont want anything thats going to drop much in value, and an increase would be ideal over the coming years

Jaguar XFR - not a lot of choice, but 500+ BHP V8 with a super charger sounds ideal
E90 M3 - not really a fan of the looks, prefer the saloon but thats out of budget
JDM impreza STI - bit of a wild card but seen some nice looking Blob/Bug eyes
VXR8/Monaro - Are they quick? or is it all noise, certainly has the rare factor, but again budget doesn't allow many options, very few for sale
C63 - ropey in this budget and also not a fan of the looks (love the noise though)

I feel like it has to be something a bit special, so i keep coming back to the Jag....am i missing anything? is there anything else that im not considering?

Will £15k buy any of those? I thought they were all up around the £20k mark (except maybe the Subaru and the Jag) - I would be willing to be proven wrong though!

If it was me, I'd buy the Jag. I very seriously considered an XF (a vanilla one though) and there seems to be something about them...

Going by your reason for wanting an antidote to the electric craze it sounds as though you'd be best off with something loud. So probably the Monaro.

fairly confident you wont get an E90 M3 at that price, maybe one that's been twisted or through the meat grinder

Surprisingly yes, albeit some higher mileage examples but certainly within reach on autotrader!

I think currently its waiting for the right specced Jag XFR which seems the favourable option

Quattroporte?

Not what I'd buy, but seems to tick the boxes.

You mention Subaru, have you discounted a Lancer?

A Monaro VXR is a cool car which you are unlikely to lose much money on. One registered prior to March 2006 will be cheaper to tax.

They are a great base if you like to mod cars. They are old now, and will require a bit of care to ensure rot hasn't taken a hold.

They are a real event to drive, even if just cruising about. They attract a lot of attention, pretty much all of it positive.

A W204 C63 is fair bit newer tech wise than the Monaro, and it does show, both in how they feel to drive and overall speed. Its a far better car to drive than the Monaro, but not necessarily a better car if you get what i mean.

15k though will only get you high mileage pre face lift car or accident repaired face lifted ones. So tread carefully at this price range.

Out of that choice it'd either be the XF-R or the Monaro/VXR. The Aussie thanks to the potential of a manual gearbox mated to a V8 and a more analogue experience. The one thing that keeps me desiring an XF-R if I ever needed to go four door is this - https://youtu.be/a2WqttxNtmo and I don't mind the looks of the earlier models either (and some of the foibles that they can have).

TBH, reading that list, there's a lot of "don't really like" etc That being the case discount them now as you'll only wish you'd bought something more special.

I think it needs to be a bit more special than that

I did look at a nice c5 rs6 but that comes back to the being nervous it would break every time I drove it laugh

X358 XJR/Super V8, 4.2 Supercharged, 400bhp, reliable and not very costly to run.

Budget seems a bit low for any of the German stuff.

Monaro would be a good bet.

You have some good reliable options at your price point.

The VXR8 is a good bet, they're a very good steer quick & feel special at low speed as well as high: They won't be as quick as an XFR but they won't cost as much to run & have pretty much stopped depreciating.

6.2 VXR8:

6.0 Monaro VXR

You can get a decent gen1 C63 which is one of the best V8's ever made & it'll map out to 500bhp, you'll have to haggle though:

C63 all day long for me. A real German hot rod with a sensational engine, pretty bulletproof too according to an old colleague
