Hi - As a newbie to privately buying a new factory order car, how much typically do you need to put down when you order the car ? Car in question is LR Discovery is that makes any difference....

I agree, circa £500 paid by credit card for Section 75 protection.

Are you just placing an order or specing the vehicle? BMW wanted £1K when I speced the new M240iXd and £500 to order the M2.

Normally we’d take £1000, if you were ordering something very particular with unusual upgrades, I’d want enough to cover the cost of the options/upgrades.

I had a guy order a non Circuit Pack GR Yaris last year, and I took £5K deposit, as it’s a car we did not want to get stuck with if he changed his mind at the last minute.

thanks all. So given wait times on lots of cars right now, a lot can happen in twelve months. What happens if you cancel the order near to the del date...I assume the dealer then can offer the car to other people and you get the deposit back if it does move on ? Is that right ?

Depends on the dealer, some will offer refundable deposits but for many the deposit will not be refundable if you cancel.

If its something you've heavily optioned up then expect to loose deposit come what may. The dealers will not want to be stuck with a car they have difficulty shifting.

Before signing the order, have a read of the cancellation clause in the T&Cs
