Why does a 2011 no have the 8 speed gearbox? something odd going on there.

I like that. A lot.
Very rare. Very fast.
Having seen that car in the metal, rough is the first word that springs to mind.
Serious question - in what way? - mechanically?

Outwardly it looks tidy - nice wheels (says refurbed, granted), it looks 49 less than 50 shades of silver (to me), no obvious scuffs and scrapes, and inside looks well looked after.

or - has it had a spruce up other than the wheels since you saw it?

I'm not convincing myself a trip to the south west was on the cards anyway, but genuinely keen to know if it helps spot future dogs in ads I quite clearly miss at the moment, even without my rose tinted specs on it seems smile

Dealer presents a car well, it might be fine, but in my experience he's not the most honest man in the world.

It's a friday, so please forgive me. In my search for a fast estate car, my budget has crept up to circa £20k.

I've narrowed it down to 2 cars:

1) BMW 2016 340i Touring with 62k miles

or

2) Audi S6 Avant - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202209220...

I'm going to look at the BMW tomorrow morning with a view to buying.

Whilst the S6 is probably the more impressive car, I feel the BMW is the safer bet.

In a perfect world, I'd prefer a Mercedes E63 estate but not within budget. I want something that is less than 8 years old, with a view to keeping it for 4 years or so, with minimal spending outside of normal servicing.

With my criteria, any other suggestions please?
I assume no linky to the 340i to keep the unscruitable amongst us at bay (I can only wish for your budget!!)

Think you've covered the sensible choices already, but

Leftfield choice: Polestar V60
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202211101...

lower your E63 aspirations to C43. Must be some haggle room to sort the cosmetics?
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202206076...

or 340i's big bro 540i
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202210090...

Happy viewing tomorrow!
Yes no linky to stop people buying it before me.

C43 is a nice car but you don't get a nice one for circa £20k.

I'd love a 540i Touring but 124k miles at £21k is too rich for me!

It certainly looks like it's had a bit of a polish and spruce up, but any old AMG with tinted lights all round (including fog lights like all the cool kids) and a wrapped roof always sets the alarm bells ringing. I remember just thinking it looked scruffy and unloved and the paint didn't seem to be as ingle shade to me in the metal, but I was just passing rather than actually inspecting it.

It is a handsome beast though. The tints look aftermarket as well which would be a win.

I was behind the R version today. Three things struck me:

1. The glorious noise
2. The exhaust pipe configuration isn't for those with OCD
3. The temperamental electrics which some some of the brake lights working intermittently

Lovely car though.

It looked st when they were brand new. Pretty sure all the contemporary road tests took the piss out of it.

Unforgivable wart on an otherwise tempting car.

If you need an estate, get an estate. A 3series barely qualifies.

Have a hard think about your 8 year criteria and consider an E500 or E55?

Leave the radio off and listen to CDs instead biggrin

Seems cheap if it's as nice as the pictures suggest

Thanks. It didn't seem to have any badging. There's quite a few abandoned cars about, makes me sad, particularly when the windows are open and doors ajar, with winter coming, and proper winter too.

Easy to fix though, just pull the fuse for it. The radio, if mine is anything to go by, still works... not that I listen to the radio (CD's).

I'd love to know how that arrived and remained at its place. It's very odd to me.

Finally a pic of my mini barge.

I took it on following the passing of my dad, and to be fair it was a typical OAPs car - bogging and a bit battle scarred, mileage was low at 75k but in the condition it was in worth buttons so decided to turn it in to a running project.

So far have :-
Full service done by me
New front drop links and brake hoses (story there)
Alloys refurbed
Various scratches and scars painted
Leather re-dyed where needed
Auto trasmission fluid changed
Exhaust leaks hunted and sorted

Still to do
Rear drop links
Roll bar bushes both ends
Full underbody clean and rust proof

You know, I actually rather like it despite its thirst. Like me, it's not the sharpest tool in the box and nowhere near as sure footed as my Alfa 159 was. However it's a great wafter/cruiser. Only let down for me is the ICE connectivity. Don't get me wrong, it has the Mark Levinson set up which sounds absolutely superb, just hate having to use headphone out and aux in

Anyway, will run this for a while and see how it goes. Not the best pic, but this morning after a wash, clay and polish.

Might help if half the photos weren’t from a different car.
