Having sold cars on eBay, with my eyes open that for every genuine bidder there's 10 who are fake or dreaming, it's quite likely that was "reverse shill bid scamming" for want of a better name.
How it works, is they use fake accounts to bid you up to a huge amount. This scares off genuine buyers, why would a genuine person bid more than they will pay? Then when the auction finishes the winning bidder never responds. However within minutes of the auction finishing the "if the winner doesn't pay up here's my mobile" messages start arriving.
After some basic checks I've sold to someone who was blatantly such a scammer, because it was still for significantly more than I was expecting to sell for. Didn't hand the keys over until the cash(more alarm bells) had gone through the bank's machine and been credited to my account.

Also eBay offers no way to pay them for such a sale... Yes you can do next best offer (which will be another scam account that doesn't respond, but despite the messages being right there in your inbox you can't say "I'll sell it to this random who's actually got in touch". They're missing out on revenue that could be used to solve the scam account problems.

Really Charles, and so fresh from a sabbatical too.
rebranding yourself 20th century man now are we?
Just had to google. Now realise the Chopper II is what I know as simply the Chopper, not some faux rehash from 2003 or somesuch. Never realised 5 speed derailleur was an option (must have been deprived as a kid!)

Antimacassars over the rear hoop on yours?, or did that fixation come later in life smile

I customised mine, I had a box on the back with motorcycle indicators and brake lights, my handlebar grips were a soft rubbery clear orange and I had side repeaters built into them at the ends. I was about ten years ahead of mandated side repeaters.

Blimey. Thread seems to have self-audited itself and we're left with this.

I'm not sure if that's wonderfully brilliant or the end of the world as we know it.

wonderfully brilliant I believe

We all have a different take

Ahem, SC430 ?

I do have visions of 21CM now having a soft rubbery clear orange steering wheel though. Must have missed that in the Octane shoot, or some snidey photoshoppery went on! smile

I'm gong to press this point. You joined a month ago. I was banned a month ago. I know I'm not you, so what's the background? You know a lot of what happened in the past so presumably you've lurked a bit, but for someone with a lot to say that can't have been easy. So why join now? What's up?

Welcome, by the way!

Yes just a long time lurker, drawn of lurkdom by what I felt was a very poor show by the management and hoping time heals some of the scars. I believe your sc430 love transcends this thread though...

I know what you mean - I think every car I've ever sold on eBay has had to go through 2/3 times before I get a non dreamer win it.

However these carswithoutreserve guys are 150% playing silly buggers. eBay showed a genuine bidder with lots of feedback winning for £4,500 odd with a hour or so to go and I thought it might actually sell... Nah, last minute bid of 4900 by someone with two feedback. They are 100% shilling.

Which has already bit them in the bum. They had a genuine bidder willing to pay almost a grand more last week than this week, but they opted to try and shill. And now it will go back again, and again, and again

And I'm not entirely sure why either - Given the state of the world, the amount of people willing to consider running an old, likely slightly knackered s600 with a 15MPG thirst for £2 per litre Ron 99 is shrinking, not growing - Shilling this way means they expect not one but two nutters to suddenly enter the market for a V12 liability at the worse possible time economically and bid the car way beyond what it's actually worth. Good luck is all I can say to them (oh,that and I've got £3k waiting for when you guys get desperate wink)

Whatever happened to the absolutely MINT C124 that appeared on thread some time ago via one of the Mercedes’ club classifieds?

There seemed a fair bit of genuine interest and if it went to a threadist I must have missed it. Would be great for it to be revealed or have a reader’s ride thread.

No, well aware of that beauty. it was a blue one which had a lot of work done by an enthusiast. Price was very decent IIRC.

Tried to search the thread but not finding it easily…

It's one of those cars that is really colour sensitive I think, probably more than most.

And wheels, too - the original dinner plate centre caps are awful, but replacement with a 5-spoke centre cap transforms.

Purple and tango btw.

That's true. You take the purple, I'll have the metallic brown.
