So finally an update!
My bank unblocked my account after doing nothing for 2 weeks... so I paid the person back at that's that.
It certainly odd how they were sending the money but given my bank confirmed it was the same account I sent back to and that money can't be taken back it seems like there wasnt a scam happening.

They were remarkably patient.
All in all, very strange but just goes to show not everything is a scam (probably)
I think the moral of the story is, if the money is in your account and not pending, you should be satisfied as my bank said they can't just take it back
