I honestly think you need to steer clear of prestige motors at this budget, OP. That BMW and the Outback are potentially ruinous in terms of running costs and repairs. You just need something basic to minimise those risks - Focus, Astra, Scenic, Japanese things like Avensis, Mazda 6 etc.

That Meriva seems worth a look. IIRC they were built at one of GM's "good" factories, and are a quality car. Have been tempted myself in the past.

P.S. the Scenic I linked to last week is still up on Autotrader. Looks like great value for what you need.

The Meriva does look at. It’s not a massive MPV either and looks good for what I need. I do like the Scenic too. I’ve never owned a French car so I can’t comment on their reliability.

I’ve asked the seller who has the Meriva for sale. It’s only got 1 key, no paperwork from previous owners as it was bought from a family friend.

I’ve had a little look on Gumtree:

https://www.gumtree.com/p/mitsubishi/2003-mitsubis...

https://www.gumtree.com/p/vauxhall/vauxhall-astra-...

https://www.gumtree.com/p/vauxhall/vauxhall-omega-...

I’m possibly thinking the Omega looks a great purchase. As you don’t see them in Estate form and in that condition.

Have you even looked at the advert for that Shogun? Short MOT, issue with starting, and wants 2500?

I know your looking for help on buying something, but have you actually gone and seen any of these cars in the flesh, or just have to trawl through on your phone day dreaming?

Every link you put up is for a different brand, model, style. If your not fussy you would have bought something by now.
I’ve been to see quite a few cars actually. As I’m not fussed on the brand or condition, but they were terrible. Even though the adverts were great.

I’ve decided an estate would be the best out of the styles I’ve looked at. So I’m just trying to find one based on condition, it being well looked after and having history.

I've wondered before if this is just a p*ss take but what would be the benefit? If its not then were just going round in circles and its painful. The OP kept mentioning dad thinking it was a waste of money but i think the only thing it will ever be is a waste of everyone's time whistle
Fair enough. My Dad still thinks it’s a waste of money. I’ve actually been to view a few cars and not really liked them.

I will ask if mods can delete my account. Save wasting everyone’s time.

I will just keep looking. The Omega I found on Gumtree was interested. However the seller was rather odd. They said that someone wanted to view the car on the 20th July and that he had given them first refusal. He then said hat the supposed buyer was paying the 100£ for the plate transfer and whatever fuel so he reckons it’s worth £2250+

I’ve found some local that I will look at on the weekend:

Decent MOT, it’s a Honda so won’t break down.

Previous MOTs flag corrosion so make sure check underneath. If all good then buy it
Yeah it looks good. I will check for rust. What about the Omega?

Looks clean, low mileage, and could be a good hack. Price looks steep for something with a short MOT but the previous MOT's look clean.

Thought you said the guy had promised it to someone else?
He did promise it to someone else. He’s now saying the car is undervalued that I had seriously undervalued my car given that I had just spent £1,500 on the replacement engine £400 on 4 new tyres, £150 to have the Tow bar fitted and a further £100 for its annual service & MOT which comes to £ 2,150 and of course I had forgotten to add on the residual value of the car itself which for a 2003 Omega Estate you will find that "we buy any car.com" only value at around £350 which is silly, so yes I should've advertised it as "offers over" £2,500 + the value of petrol in the tank which at current petrol prices is £150 for a full tank of 75 Litres

I’ve some better images of the HRV. It’s had a few bad touch ups on the rear arches.

I’ve told the Omega seller that I will leave it. Perfect car for me really but I think it would be hiding some gremlins. The HRV is very cheap, which is good. But the rust could be a problem. It’s not that far from me so I may just have a look.

I’ve been using my Dads Nissan Leaf and I can get some things in the boot but then a lot of it lives on the rear seat. I don’t want to damage the leather or dent it which is a problem.

The BMW with LPG has sold which is probably a good thing as I’ve seen a few videos online we’re they have thrown up some rather scary bills..

There are two Volvos that have come up on an alert:

A friend sent me a really unusual car a Nissan Murano. I’ve never seen one. The tax is the highest bracket though which is unfortunate.

Bloody hell mate, you need a cheap to buy, cheap to run, reliable workhorse to help you do your job in as pain free and low cost manner as possible.

Don't buy a big, thirsty, rare, expensive to fix SUV, an old BMW 5 series, even a Volvo V70 at this price bracket, none of that. Focus on mass market cars which sold in plentiful numbers.

Stop fannying about with ropey old Omegas and blingy orange-Cheshire-lass tat like Muranos and all that.

Find the newest thing you can afford, from a boring mass market maufacturer, and buy it on condition and to a lesser extent history.
Fair enough. I think your right. So far the V50 looks a solid and one to view on the weekend. I will as I say try the HRV with it being local. It is worth a look, if it’s full of rust then I’ve not wasted too much travel time.

When did buying a car become so complicated! biggrin

Seriously, it took me just over two months to find the car I needed from a limited pool. Only 1500 were ever made and I needed one with full stamped history, low mileage and within an £11k budget (range was £18000-7000). I found two more in that period, but missed out. How have you not found a car yet? biggrinbiggrin

My advice would be Toyota/Honda petrol something or a Hyundai / Kia something (they are built to last a long warranty period, and some).

Get something on an 08+ plate to avoid rust.
I wasn’t aware there was a time limit…..

A local dealer has a Honda Accord Estate:

I know it’s a diesel but it looks straight and inside looks superb and it’s got roof rails for my ladders.

I vote Avensis out of those two.
I do quite like that tbh. My uncle had the same engine 225k and it’s still going. I will phone the seller to see if it’s still available.

The dealer has informed me the HRV has been sold. He said that he has this, it’s only got a short MOT and it’s Diesel:

If they can’t be bothered to stick 12months MOT on it, why not. Avoid
You’ve got to love car salesman. I asked would they put 12 months mot on it. They will if I pay for it….

I think it’s hiding a few faults and a 6 week MOT. I will leave it. It’s quite an unusual car.

If you're wanting to slide out your heavy tool cases, with no rear sill to negotiate, the FR-V does have a 3" sill between floor and rear hatch door. Also, with the 3 seats wide set up, no doubt the seats could feel too slim for larger people. Similar to MK8 Civic, but with decent ride quality.
That’s what I mean the boot space does look ideal. The dealer is a bit of an idiot though..

There are a few available at a high price with a lot of mileage on them;
