Back in August 2021 I took out a 5k personal loan to buy a car. I brought a Honda civic that was a write off. Ended up scrapping the car within 6 weeks of owning as the garage wouldn't do anything about it. Since then I've been getting closer to clearing my loan and was contemplating getting another 5k loan and maybe trying to buy used again. However, because of my experience with this I decided against it and would prefer a finance thag is tied into the car.

If I could go and talk to 21 year old me I would say buy a shed and put that £250 a month into something like a Vanguard life strategy account. I dread to think how much money I would have now if when I first started 30 years ago I had just bought something cheap outright and invested all the money I wasted.

But you don't want to hear that like 21 year old me wouldn't have wanted to hear it either.

I also wish I could do this!

As others have said, you won't want to be driving whatever you PCP now by next year so you'll end up in a cycle of debt. If you're worried about buying a lemon, then either get an inspection or find a relative / friend who knows about cars and taken them with you.

The difficulty you'll have at the moment is that £12k now buys a car that was £9-10k a year ago.

All these are manufacturer approved, under insurance group 30, meet your PCP requirements and shouldn't bore you after a while. Might want to run a few of them through an insurance price comparison site first though!

Thats what tipped it for me. I've been 4 years and had 6 cars because of being mis sold cars that have broken so I want something a bit more tied together.
Bring a mechanic or expert to view cars with you. Spend a bit on the inspection if you have to. It's fifty or a hundred quid rather than £250 a month for the next four years.
I’m sure I remember the OP’s thread re 5k cars and having bought duds.

You’d be well advised to getting the car professionally inspected, even if it’s a 12 or 13 grand car. A decent garage won’t mind at all. The inspector may even pick up things you can get the garage to fix. Then, if he finds no faults it gives you peace of mind that it’s a great car!
