I urgently need a car for my other half. I have been very indecisive, with reservations on multiple cars over the last weeks but I have been unable to commit for some reason.

Short version, I sold my E91 330i without a plan to replace it as I had a buyer who wanted it. Since then I’ve had use of the other half’s Juke to go to work.

This leaves the other half stuck at home with a 5 month old during the week…

Plan is to buy a new car for her and In the short term I’ll continue to use the Juke but then replace it for something more exciting.

Neither of us can get excited about a Kuga or equivalent so we have been looking at something older such as 2010-12 BMW X5.

Criteria
SUV, big boot, auto, reverse camera is desirable but at least senors, privacy glass, sat nav and a reasonable nice place to be. Low road noise etc. Not horrendous running costs.

Budget is up to £12k, ideally cheaper, but can also spend a little more.

Get a L322 Range Rover. You wont beat it for the money. That budget would get a 2010-12 4.4 tdv8.

Meant to add the car ideally wouldn’t be too far from East Yorkshire.

CX-5? https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/13413734

Heated leather memory seats, sat nav, auto, rear camera and parking sensors, big boot and privacy glass. Not exciting to be in but does exactly what you want as a family wagon.

Until they break, then parts need to come from the US or Italy.

I'd go Range Rover or possibly a Freelander

L322 probably too big
CX5 we have looked at. If that was any colour other than red I think we’d be interested. I’ll ask…
Jeep no thank you
Disco 4 id love but I’d be at the bottom of the market
XC90 I can’t get excited about. Do like XC60 though

No love for the X5?

Don't waste your money on all that flash stuff which is complicated and will let you down smile

Get a Duster. I bought one new last year and it's been brilliant.

Renault 4/2CV of the 21st century.

Had a Discovery 3 from new once. Car I've lost the most money on after 3 years. Lots of breakdowns and time back at the dealers. Even on day 2 of ownership.

Before I get flamed. Yes, I'm sure there are plenty of D3s that have been fine, but once bitten.....

Plus Jaguar Landrover servicing costs.

The early x5 and l322 of similar age are close to being the same car under the skin as bmw build the l322 with the same stuff as the x5. I cant imagine the newer x5 is any smaller than that one.

Taken my L322 round london, multi story carparks, offroad, towed trailers. Done basically everything you can ask of a car and cannot recommend any other vehicle for a daily driver.

Not quite an SUV, but a post 2012 Volvo XC70 D5 in SE Lux form is a very nice place to be. D5 engine is very reliable and has lots of poke and SE Lux trim provides plenty of toys.

I’ve had 2 and loved both of them.

Qashqai? I recently bought a 2016 1.5d Tekna. Mega well speced. 2 years warranty, 2 year servicing main dealer car.

Mines a manual but they do do an auto. I’m pleasantly surprised , it’s a really nice place to be.

A Lexus 450h is s pretty comfortable place to be, with low road noise, very quiet inside, reversing camera, and reliable.

Go for the X5. Try and get a 40d for your money, preferably in M sport trim. Also try and get as many options as possible - e.g. rear camera and top view, 7 seats. Beware the pan roof can be problematic so not the end of the world if it doesn’t have one. I had one for 4.5 years. Loved it and generally very reliable. A nice thing to drive and handle remarkably well for 2 tonne suv

Yeti

Just got a TDI 4x4. It's great. 45mpg. Comfy. Ideal if you don't want a full-size 4x4, but have it as a backup. I didn't want a people carrier/SUV like an SMax either. It treads the line inbetween really well.

Cayenne, or a nice ML/GL.

If you want an LR product then go for an L322 with the 4.4 TDV8, they’re the least problematic of all of them and lovely to drive, that said it’s still a LR.
