Just after some advice please folks. Recently accepted an offer on my car via the car seller who is named after a type of road. The winning bidder is a motor trader and have advised me "not to fill out the v5 as their office automatically dispose the vehicle to trade when they receive the v5"

My understanding is that I need to notify the DVLA of the sale which I guess I could do online when payment has been received assuming their advice isnt correct however I'm trying to figure out if I'm being advised incorrectly by them (the dealer) and the reasons why they might be doing so.

I did advise them directly that I believe I needed to fill out the v5 and retain that section to send to the dvla however they repeated their advice that they do this for me. Is there any issue with this?

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

Personally I'd send off the V5 as you normally do when selling a vehicle, and indeed are told to by the DVLA when you sell.

There seems to be very little (or no) benefit to you, and potentially many downsides. You may not get the correct amount of Road Excise refund, the trader may not be particularly reputable and may sell to equally less reputable people. The potential for speeding tickets, camera activations, drive offs from petrol stations etc. coming to you would be there.

Admittedly this is a rather pessimistic view and at the lower end of the likelihood scale, but I just don't see why you should take the risk.

If you're selling to the trade you need to fill out the yellow section of the V5C or if online select the "sold vehicle to the trade" option then give the log book to the trader along with the rest of the paperwork.

The website has specific ways of noting that you have sold to a motor trader, car-selling agent, etc. As said, don’t run the risk of remaining to be seen as the registered keeper.

I’ve had a dealer insist on doing this in the past. The way I got around it is was note down the V5C document number before the sale, hand over the V5C to the trader and then when I got back home I notified the DVLA online of the transfer.

Former car dealer here.

That's rubbish.

Fill out the yellow slip as per DVLA's instructions.

Why do some dealers say this?

Perhaps they don't have trade plates, and want the car to remain taxed?

Perhaps they don't want cars being notified as "in the trade" to them? Tax dodge?

Whatever reason they tell you, it's not right.

Do it online.

Perhaps they're worried you might add them as another owner rather than passing it to trade

I’ve usually traded cars in and don’t recall filling in the V5. They were to main dealers and I’ve given them the V5 as part of the exchange at collection I believe.

Last car was sold to WBAC and again I left them with the V5. I got an automated email the next day from the DVLA confirming I’d sold to the motor trade and that any remaining vehicle tax would be returned to me in due course.

I don’t know if what I’ve done is correct but I’ve never had a problem. I don’t know where I’d stand if the nice WBAC lady had taken my car on a blat that evening or if one of the dealer employees had done the same though.

If you'd have got DVLA fines after your sale DVLA would simply tell you it's the sellers responsibility to inform them of the sale.

Had you got speeding fines etc the Police would need you to prove the sale somehow. Hassle you shouldn't need to go through.

I've worked at several dealerships over the years, and heard plenty about upset customers who'd got stuff through the post because staff forgot to do V5 stuff.

Never trust them to do it.

DVLA will deem you responsible for that car until you tell them otherwise.

Thanks all, I dont think there will be any issues however will ensure I keep photo evidence if v5 so I can do online the following day. I will have evidence of emails from the dealer aswell as money transfer etc if anything goes awry.

I mught even retain the specific section of the v5. My suspicion as one of you posted is they are worried ill register them as keeper rather than trade.

This every time. Do note that it can only be done between 07:00 and 19:00 each day.

Aren't they just brokers though? Advertising platform?

Dealers bid on their system, and pay/collect the car.

Or do Motorway actually buy cars these days to remarket?

Either way they shouldn't be telling to NOT fill out the yellow slip, if they're worried about mistakes they should carefully talk you through how to do it like I have done for people hundreds of times.

They are just a platform for traders to bid on cars. I read the OP as a trader named after a road, but on reading it again the OP said type of road, hence Craig correcting me.

This is more embarrassing as I actually used Motorway to sell my car in February biggrin

Sorry for the thread hijack OP. Thank you for the tip, next time I’ll make sure it’s done before I leave, even if I have to do it myself from my phone!

To be fair to the dealer, they maybe just wanting to do it so it’s done correctly. It’s amazing how many people can’t fill one in correctly and put the dealer down as the next owner instead of in trade, the dealer then has the problem of sorting it all out. I would just contact the DVLA if you haven’t had a confirmation after a month or so and check if you are still the registered keeper
