Personally, I'd save a bit of cash and go for a Skoda Superb. The hatchback version has a huge boot, the estate version is cavernous. The top of the line sportline version is pretty quick as well.
I think Sportline is just a trim level? I don't believe the engines are any differentPersonally, I'd save a bit of cash and go for a Skoda Superb. The hatchback version has a huge boot, the estate version is cavernous. The top of the line sportline version is pretty quick as well.
Huge inside and DCC available for comfortable wafting on demand.
L&K trim has all the toys too. Heated x4, cooled too up front, ACC, upgraded sound, CarPlay / AA, plus all the safety stuff - blind spot, lane assist, rear cross traffic etc etc.

I’d have a look at a Merc E400d - but at 6ft 6 you’ll want to avoid one with a panoramic roof and get rid of the run flat tyres. Driving Assistance Plus package is well worth seeking out but is fairly rare. The 220d is fine as well - it’s very smooth and quiet for a 4 pot, very economical and once you’re cruising there’s nothing in it, but the 400d is more refined and effortless under hard acceleration. The 9 speed box is brilliant.
The glass part of the roof doesn’t lose any space, but the bracing around the intrudes by a few centimetres and it drove me to distraction with my hair catching on the headlining - and I’m not quite as tall and only have short hair. Other than that the E Class was a brilliant tool for long business journeys. I did many 12 hours+ days at the wheel in mine.
If I was going back on the road for work for £20k I’d go for an E220d SE from 2018 onwards. For £30k I’d be looking for an E400d. There’s something more zen about the E Class compared with the 5 series which is a fine car and probably what I’d buy for personal use if I was only doing occasional long trips.

I'm 6ft 3 and find my 2018 Superb Estate really comfortable on long drives up to 350 miles.
Great load lugger.
I have the seat 1 notch away from being fully back so try for size obviously.
Mine is the basic 1.4tsi 150 engine. Absolutely fine for motorway cruising. Gets 47/48mpg at 75mph.
I have done over 700 miles on a tank. Glasgow to Aberystwyth and back in a day.
Huge bargain at £18k new compared with the market today and increased Skoda pricing.

Thanks for the replies everyone, much apricated. Current thoughts
- maybe a volvo is a good shout
- e400d sounds good. maybe a bit pricey. touring most likely preferable. Adaptive cruise though from a quick look appears to not standard.
- 5 series touring still looking good (again have to make sure it's got the adaptive cruise).
- used tesla isn't something for me.
All I can really think though is how dull these cars are? I don't get how anyone can really look forward to buying any of these cars, guess they're just seen as tool though.
I think an 730D msport at around £40/45k would be my preferred choice - but not sure the depreciation is something I can be ok with.
Trouble is the golf r is such a good car, I've had it since new and (touch wood) done near 47000 faultless miles in it. It's just these longer drives really call for a comfy barge.
I've been thinking about it and I think if I buy the caterham first I won't be so bothered about the 'daily' and it'll be easier to swap the golf for a big volvo.

Don't worry about the depreciation on a 730d it'll be no worse than on the 5 series you buy due to the mileage you do, so if it's a 730d you want then that's the car to get.- maybe a volvo is a good shout

New job and I recon I'll be doing about 20k miles a year. I'm 6ft 6" and want to be comfortable. Current car is a mk7.5 golf r, whilst it's fine for the job I personally just don't find doing this many miles comfortable, I want to be proper comfy.
Suggestions please?
- Reliable
- Not massive service bills
- bit of power, but needs economy.
- must had adaptive cruise and apple car play
- bit different / nice ideally
- good for tip runs
- newer the better. I have a car allowance that's reasonable so have to be sensible.
I'm thinking, 730d, 520d touring, A8? But don't really know, happy for something smaller if it suits a taller driver.
Max ideally £40k. £30k be nicer. £20k even better as then I'll get a caterham (maybe just a boring passat?).
I’m 6’4”. 740d x drive got on my nerves, hair on the roof and at the side of the sunroof all the time with the seat so low rear seat passenger could hardly get their shoe under the seat. No good. Suggestions please?

lol brilliant!
Never thought someone 6'6 would fit in a Caterham!
Ha, well I don't really - although I think it will be spot on. It's an SV chassis and initially I could barely turn the steering wheel, but then I had the peddles moved as far away from the driver as possible, and now it's pretty good! It's helped by having the tillet style seat. Once I get the floor lowered it'll be perfect. Never thought someone 6'6 would fit in a Caterham!
