That's correct. If the youngster is n the car though they should turn off their bluetooth otherwise they will get blamed for the parent's bad driving!
True!

Insured my 18 year old son on a Mini One for £650 fully comp with Post Office insurance. He is the main driver with us as named, not a black box policy and £350 excess. Very cheap we thought.
Did a Cooper convertible for my son - wasn’t much more on the insurance than the One or a multitude of other 1l cars

Are we ever going to find out how old CG2020UK's wife was when she insured this 208GTI for peanuts?

Abarth 595

Bought one for our oldest when she was 17, cost 800 to insure pre-pass and 900 post pass.
£900 to insure a 17 year old on an Abarth 595?! I would never have guessed that!
Yet a Peugeot somehow starts a lynch mob despite both being hot hatches and similar insurance groups.

You’ve just posted below your wife is 35?? So how is what you paid to insure her as a new driver relevant to the costs of insuring a 17 y/o

Got quite excited when I read this as our son (19) has just passed his test finally.

Cheapest fully comp non black box quotes, 5k miles, SDP, £500 voluntary excess, quiet village in Staffs, wife as named driver with 25+ years of driving and no accidents.

So she’s 40?

I mean no one would dare lie about their wife’s age in the other direction would they?

Think when she is closer to 20 than 30 you just don’t care to be honest lol.

As I’ve said, the OP or someone else can run a quote on compare the market. Hopefully works out for them like it did for us.

Out of interest, what are electric cars like for young drivers to insure? Back in the day a 205 Gti 1.9 or Astra Gte 16 valve were the cars we all wanted, but were uninsurable. I remember a friend wanting an Astra Gte 16 valve and stating it was too fast for the road with a 0 to 60 time of 7.4

Now any electric car would blow them away without even trying, and would be even quicker than the 208 Gti in this example.

So is an electric car cheaper to insure than a slower hot hatch?

Thanks for most of the input, as ever on Pistonheads these days it doesn’t take too long for things to go a little strange…
Electric cars are no doubt a vehicle type sadly my daughter will have the “pleasure” of driving for many years in her future, for now I’d like her to experience some interesting petrol engined vehicles.
When I was a little older than she is now there were often some relative insurance bargains to be had and still be able to enjoy something fun. For example a 309GTI was significantly cheaper to insure than its more desirable 205 cousin.
Some form of hatch is what she’d like - at the moment an Alfa Mito is on the list of potentials.

Whatever you get put some decent tyres on it. Many first cars are inherited from grandparents or were previously second cars for pootling about in and they end up with all sorts of mismatched ditch finders on them!

With a 0-60 of 6.5sec for the 208GTI what sub £7K electric car would that be lol.

This is such a stupid suggestion that the cheapest electric car that is quicker that the 208GTI is a £19,990 Tesla with 118,000miles.

Only on this forum could someone accuse you lying, get sent proof that you aren’t, still accuse you of lying, suggest absolute rubbish like the above (poor attempt at a dig) and you be considered the pratt.

Too many keyboard warriors on the forum who have ruined it with absolute rubbish and when confronted now go hiding. If Joey Deacon hadn’t of replied to me there wouldn’t have been an issue. I’d even offered him friendly advice on his post in the last 30days regarding a 208GTI.

All he had to say was “sorry mate, didn’t realise you could do that. This insurance companies have a right laugh at us eh”. Instead he got on like a pratt and deserves to be called out on it.

He is no better than the people giving opinions on car despite never having driven them.

To be fair, you still haven't told us how old your wife was when she passed her test and insured a 208GTI.

If she wasn't 17/18 then its not really relevant to the thread.

As for the thread, Alfa Mitos I see on OP's potentials are nice little cars, I'm running around in a TwinAir model at the moment. I'm 33 though so can't comment on insurance.
