I have a budget of upto £20k for my next car. It makes financial sense to me to use a credit card to buy the car (if possible) utilising free credit for a year or so and have the cash in a savings account earning interest. However, do many dealerships accept credit cards as payment? I can see their issue with the added buyers protection but are there any other reasons why or why not?

I put £10k on credit card with the rest on debit when we bought last summer. It wasn't a deal breaker but most dealers seem to only want a deposit on credit card.

Most dealers don’t want to take credit card payments that large as the transaction cost is huge. Depending on their rates a £20k purchase could cost the dealer somewhere between £200-400 that’s a big chunk off their margin

Many will, but they may want you to cover the fees. Others simply won’t touch them for large payments. All you can do is ask the specific dealer.

I've bought a fair few cars using nothing but a credit card, none for £20k some some for not too far off. My experience has usually been that they'll cover the fee themselves if you pay the asking price and don't muck about haggling. I'm more than happy with that if I'm borrowing interest free.

No point in asking us - only person who can tell you is the dealer who you are buying from.

All sorts of reasons why they won't - merchant accounts limits, chargeback and fraud risk, AML, card fees and settlement terms...
