That does look rather nice and what a great gift. Out of interest isn't the insurance horrific at 21 though?
Insurance was just under £2500. I am just waiting for him to get home after giving it a final clean and it's just started raining.

Thanks for the link, I had been looking for an M140 for my son's 21st and put a deposit down once I saw it posted here on Sunday. It's a great spec and a fantastic example. Just back from a fun drive picking it up in London and tempted to keep it.
Wow, that's a really generous 21st present. thumbup

I hope he is more sensible than I was at that age. If I'd had a car with that sort of performance when I was 21 I doubt I'd be typing this now!

Very nice - looks like it's been owned by an enthusiast with all the tweaks and subtle mods!

Fantastic buy and award for the best 21st birthday present!

I think when I was 21 I bought my 1974 Beetle (which I still have)

It's crazy how well these have kept their value.

I traded in my 36k mile, 3dr, Alpine White over Coral car back in July 2020 for 16k - reckon a similar spec and mileage car is comfortably above that still.

I ran mine for 18 months then moved up to an M4, insurance ended up cheaper than the 140i was when I was 21!

To be honest, if you're using specialists to avoid the 'M tax' then the running costs aren't hugely different between the 140s and the full M cars. Same amount of spark plugs, same amount of oil... only addition is the diff service which is a pittance in the grand scheme of things - and obviously brake discs if you end up needing those in your ownership.

When I had my 140i PSS were still the tyre of choice, then on my M4 I ran Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersports so the difference in tyres was only £50 per corner.

What you think of the Goodyear?

They do really well on tests and are nearly £80 a corner cheaper for me than my MPS4S so are starting to get tempting.

What are the common issues (if any) with the B58 lumps?

Yep very nice 21st birthday present there! biggrin

Well specced too which is what you want as resale will be loads easier later I think.

My 21 year old self would be horrified at the automatic gearbox though haha. Back when I was that age an automatic was for people who'd got old and grey haired biggrin

I've been toying with the idea of an M140i local to me... it's almost the perfect spec and clearly a well looked after example... I.m just not sure I can't justify it right now... I need to do more man maths tomorrow hehe

I might ring for an insurance quote tomorrow too as I think that will either make it more viable, or put the notion to bed in an instant.

I can’t comment on the comparison with PS4S (which are a known great tyre). When my original MPSS set were up for replacement I went for Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric 6 - all the tests had them tied with Michelin PS5, and the Goodyears were a fair chunk cheaper.

In short - they’re massively better than the MPSS, especially when it’s wet or cold. Grip is in a different league in the day-to-day conditions we have in the UK. Ride comfort and noise are about the same.

I run winters (Michelin Pilot Alpin 5) from Nov-March; if you’re keeping one set on year round I’d guess the difference between MPSS and PS5/Goodyear 6 will be even more stark.

Have to agree wasn’t a Pilot Super Sport fan at all. Lethal in winter especially on a very tail happy car!

Thankfully I do the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 as well in winter. Trudging through the snow in an M2 when 4x4s are stuck will never not be funny biglaugh

I really liked them, I got 16k out of the rears on my M4.

Much better than the MPSS and MPS4 in poor conditions, no discernable difference in the dry (other than the sidewalls being a little softer), rear would break away progressively if you provoked it which was nice.

I'd couldn't really tell any difference between them and the PS4S other than them lasting longer and them working better in lower temps. I didn't track mine but I suspect the Michelins may be better in that respect.

This was the Goodyear Supersports specifically - the performance version as opposed to the asymmetrics. They came up well in tests against PS4S etc.

My Pilot Super Sports are down to 2mm on the rears of the M4, so you can imagine how little grip I've got now with those! hehe

Good fun though in fairness, although they will be changed very soon though.

I agree. I bought a BMW with MPSS tyres in December 2019 and they were hopeless in a cold damp British winter. frown

From my research they seem pretty reliable. There is an issuer of the oil filter disintegrating but I’m not sure how prevalent this is.

Can you be my dad too? laugh

Goes without saying but make sure he's careful with it. So many of these get pranged by inexperienced drivers who have no to minimal experience with RWD cars, let alone powerful ones. I'd be over the moon to have one of these at 21 but, looking back, I definitely would binned it.

He's a wizard playing Forza on the Xbox...

In all seriousness, he's driven 50k miles in a 1.6TDI golf in the last four years since passing his test. In the last year, he's also had access to my 986 Boxter S which he's done about 8000 miles and has no traction control. He flies planes and also used to race karts.

If you're into necrophilia, then yeah, sure biglaugh

No, fair play in that case! Seems like a good lad who knows what he's doing when it comes to driving. Makes a nice change at that age. Sure he'll be absolutely over the moon with this.

Looks nice and good spec. Notice it’s running Pirelli on the rear and Michelin up front.

The tyre mis match wouldn't bother me, it's not some kind of precise handling exotica wink

Seems like a good car on paper.
