So I’ve been thinking about moving the E46 M3 on for sometime now but never have, I’m now at the point after 9 years I think I’ve had my time with it and time to enjoy something else.

The XKR has always been a car that’s been on the radar and I’m thinking this might be a suitable replacement for the M3, although having a 3 year old and another one on the way shortly my logical side is jumping up and down telling me not to be stupid, so start looking at the XFR (lovely car) but as a weekend car not 100% it will feel as special as jumping in a XKR.

Has anyone had any experience with either of these cars and put some advice my way on what to do?

With a growing family I'd go the other way here and say that now is the best time to get a car like this, knowing that once those kids get older there's zero chance they'll fit in the back of a 2+2 so either do it now or wait until the kids have left home.

I was at the Jaguar spares day at the weekend in Malvern and saw a few XKRs in the car park, what really stunned me though was a pair of XKR-S's that had me questioning whether or not I should've seriously looked in to them before I bought the F-Type. Absolutely beautiful cars!

XFR is a fine option but I'd look at that was something you're forced in to when you can't get away with a 2+2.

I may be the wrong person to ask as I have two XKRs. The X100 XKR convertible is a beautiful to look at automobile but not a fun car to drive, frightening at speed in the twisties, and prone to a lot of expensive repairs. However, my 2010 5.0L X150 XKR coupe, which I've owned for ten years and 200,000 miles, is the best automobile i have or will have ever owned. My car has never been babied, tracked many dozens of times, inexpensively pulleyed and tuned to about 600hp, and still to this day remains my daily driver because it's so good. It is a GT car capable of sports car-like performance without a bone jarring ride and with all the luxury you could want. It has also been the most reliable auto I've ever owned. A "family" car, however, is stretching the definition quite a bit as no one will ever be sitting in the back seat. The infotainment screen is not state of the art, but if driving pleasure and prowess is what you're looking for not electric gadgetry, you'll not be disappointed. Below is my 200,000 mile example.

XFR for your circumstances I'd say. The XKR, whilst lovely, really is very small in the back and struggling with 2 little ones in a car park with a 3 door car that has massive doors is no-ones idea of fun.

The XFR will still feel more special than your M3, the drivetrain is absolutely ridiculous.

Rear seats in the XK aren't really suitable for humans you like, XFR all the way.

I’ve never even seen one of these before but that is a stunning car!

Thank you for your kind comments. I have and still love this car even after 199,000 miles. To be honest, I prefer it to my gorgeous and ferocious De Tomaso Pantera, which given the right offer I would not have any qualms about selling. The XKR, on the other hand, will be with me until I can no longer drive an automobile. It's been than good.

The F-type is a hoot to drive, but the XKR is a "grownup's" car, elegant, refined, but wild when you step on the happy pedal. The 5.0L Supercharged Jag V8 is a wondrous torque monster. I remember the shock I felt the first time I floored it.

XKR feels special as soon as you're sat in it, more so than any saloon will.

But if you need any back seat passengers forget it.

Both excellent, given the drivetrain but in your scenario it has to be 4dr's and actual rear seats so an XFR(S).

With regard to car seats in the back, about 2 weeks ago I had to pick up my grandson from school and my wife's SUV was unavailable. I took the car seat and tried to get it in the back but the height of the car seat would not allow it to fit without hitting the roof and the glass from the hatch. (I later came to find out that the car seat's back was adjustable lower). So I put the car seat in the front passenger seat, got my grandson in and drove very carefully home. The XFR will obviously work better for family use, has the same drivetrain, and is capable of excellent performance as well. BUT, the XKR is special, and if you dare to bring an XKR into a conversation with Aston Martin lovers, you'll get quite a tongue lashing for having the audacity to mention them in the same breath. (Though the XKR will outperform its DB9 body double quite handily even the V12 versions). Whichever choice you make, should make you very happy.

Difficult to choose between those 2 but I’d lean toward the XFR.
Both cars I’d love to own though.

XFR more practical, you can even fold the rear seats down if you want a 2 seater or need more boot space.

Regarding practicality, OP must decide himself. But XKR over XFR any day.

Yes its tough call.

On looks its the XKR hands down
Practicality XFR

This is how I end up at a stalemate and stick with what I've got, for the past couple of years
