BMW 435d Gran Coupe vs 640d Gran Coupe
Discussion
Currently looking at buying either of the two cars, F36 or F06.
Looking at 15 plate onwards, budget £20k (can stretch it a bit if needed).
The 4 Series just doesn't seem as good value for money as the 6, despite having the same engine in them. 6 has far more standard equipment and interior looks nicer quality (although have never driven one).
Which would you pick between the two? I'm a bit concerned that the size of the 6 Series will make it awkward round town, and that it isn't as practical as the 4 Series being a hatch.

I really like both of them. The 640d has the more nice interior for certain, however the 435d has the added practicality of the hatchback in comparison though. I'd be very happy with either of them(I do currently have a F82 M4 and I've had a F13 640d though).
The 640d is a lot of car for the money though I reckon.

I considered both before buying a 335d touring.
As above poster, the 6 is a class above the 3/4 series in terms of interior ambience (not that the 3/4 series is cheap or basic!)
It is obviously a big car but feels really wide on the road, I think owing to the smaller glasshouse.
I found cars without the pan roof to feel claustrophobic inside, again down to the small glasshouse and dark headlining.
It definitely needs the adaptive dampers for sure.
Only seats 4, which may/may not be a consideration.
Boot is big but aperture is small and an odd shape.
To my eyes the shape is also hugely colour dependent but I appreciate colour/trim is a personal thing.
Having discounted the 6 I settled on searching for a 335d/435d GC in my ideal spec, in great condition with proper service history.
Fundamentally they are all proper cars so you won't be disappointed whichever you pick.
Good luck with your hunt!
Cheers,
Chris

Have you driven a 6 series? The GC is massive.
I got rid of my coupe, it was just too big for town driving, and drove like a big boat. Lots of lag between pedal and torque, in low revs there was a huge drop off, hence the engine was constantly running at higher revs in town to compensate.
I would be looking at the 440i petrol instead. Even with the 6 series sound proofing, the diesel engine was obvious. Don’t get a 6 if you like sporty feeling cars, it’s like driving on a PlayStation, zero connection to the car. The 4 is better in this regard.

Slightly off topic, but I had a bit of fun with a 335d touring in the 640d once(rolling from 60 to around a 100), and I was surprised at how much quicker the 335d was. In my head I thought that it would be quite close because they both weigh about the same. keo said:
Interested to hear peoples thought as I have thought about a 4 series gc as a replacement for my daily. Although I would be after a 430d rwd one.
The 6 is very nice but I think it would be a bit large for me.
I had a 430D gran coupe 2016 plate. One of the key reasons for picking it was because it had the 3 litre engine but was only 2WD and lower as a result. The xdrive versions are somewhere 2-4cm higher and it's very noticeable. So you need to buy and install after market springs, otherwise the 435d is a jacked up car that looks less sporty. The 6 is very nice but I think it would be a bit large for me.
2WD in 3-4 years of UK weather caused me no issues and having the power from the rear feels fun and sporty.
The hatchback was very convenient - huge boot for push chair, shopping, suitcases. The back seats are good and make this a fairly family friendly car for kids say under 5'6. We had our teen and 11 yo in the back and it was perfect.
It drives very well, though wasn't a fan of the runflats which seem to tramline and cause jittery driving on this car for some reason. It was minor but worth pointing out.
The engine is obviously superb and pulls endlessly, and BMW do the best auto box in the business.
My favourite daily car.

When I needed to replace my E class estate (not ULEZ compliant) I had a long-list which included;
C class estate hybrid
3 series touring
3 series GT
4 series GC
6 series GC
5 series touring
5 series GT
When I got the E class we had a German Shepherd and a stzu, and needed a lot of space. My GSD is sadly no longer with us, so we didn't need quite so much space, but needed to fit two rapidly elongating teenagers in the back.
6 GC got eliminated because you can't put a dog in the boot, it's an actual boot not a hatch.
Estates got dropped when I realised I didn't have to have one (have had an estate of some sort for about 15 years)
Didn't like the look of the 5GT
Ended up choosing between the 4GC and 3GT. Leg and headroom too tight in the 4 series, back of the 3 GT is massive, which swung it.
Comparing the 4GC and 6GC - the six series isn't exactly cramped inside, but it does seem small compared to how huge it is on the outside. Nicely made interior, though.
