To me the sheer fact that the OP is considering both makes them eminently comparable. They may be two different approaches but both aim at a similar outcome, ie enjoying the driving experience.

I would probably suggest the Cayman as one probably needs to tick the mid engine Porsche thing once or twice in their life and ticking the sorted FWD hatch box is probably much easier in terms of opportunities to do so among the way.

I have a feeling, that for new cars at least, there are going to be plenty of premium sportscars produced going forward and not so many out-and-out hot hatches - witness the lack of anything sporty from the latest gen Peugeot/Vauxhall cars let alone a GTi or VXR version, they've not made an RS Clio in 5 years or an RS Megane in 3 years, the whole Fiesta line is being given the chop, etc.
