Hi,

Looking for advice, will try and explain the best I can. Fellow employees aren’t being very helpful

I work at a main dealer. We’ve sold a p/x car on to a Trader. The salesperson that took the car in as p/x never took the log book from the owner, they have only ever been able to get hold of a photo of the front page

Trader has bought the car, I’ve given them a printout of the front page. Trader is able to tax the car as the code is on the front page, it’s eleven digits long, I’m told you put a zero in front of it to tax the car

The main issue is that the salesperson left for a new job yesterday so has had no interest in getting the physical copy of the log book sent in by the previous owner, they didn’t take a holding fee which they should do in this position

Trader is saying they don’t want to put another owner (themselves) on the log book. They want to have the physical copy of the log book but it’s never going to get given to us now

Trader only has this scan of the front page so when they sell the car they won’t have the green slip to give to the new owner

I’ve Googled into it a bit and no answers really work as Trader wants a log book from the previous owner

I’ve spoken to the woman that deals with V5’s at work but she wasn’t overly helpful. She said the trader could apply for a new logbook with the new owner once sold but it takes six weeks. Like I said, trader wants the log book which isn’t going to materialise from the previous owner!

Any advice appreciated, can’t really see a way to get what the trader wants

The trader has all the info they need to transact the sale already. As you have said, the new keeper reference is the same number as the main v5 reference just with an extra number - I don’t think it even matters which number you use.

All he needs to do when he sells the car is explain the situation and reassure the customer that they’ll have a new V5 in a matter of days anyway (assuming he changes owners online like a normal person).

So all you need to do is offer a sincere apology and perhaps a platitude such as ‘it is what it is’ smile
