Fiestas and minis are expensive to insure despite being small engine, low insurance class.

We have had a 2009 Jazz and a 2010 Micra, both 1.2 which is the sweet spot for affordable insurance. Both sub £2k to buy, even with current inflated prices. Each c.£800-£900 to insure for first year on black box. Jazz went down to about £600 second year without a box. Micra just renewed for second year at £450 with black box. Each driver passing test v soon after 17th birthday and using cars for commuting to school with parents as named drivers. Don’t be scared of black boxes. No problems at all even with a slightly speedy 17 year old girl. Encourages safer driving.

I have a VW Up on the drive that's for sale after both daughter and son passed their tests in it.

The insurance for both of them was very reasonable and even after having a black box to start with the premiums stayed at a sensible level (£4-600)

My son got a 1L Kia Picanto, had been reliable in the 14 months he’s had it.
Insurance was ~£1800, just renewed with 1yrs NCB and 1yrs experience for £900.
Tried all the usual Fiesta, Corsa etc as well as left field options like the Volvo mentioned in this thread but it made no difference to the premium, the Kia and a Ford KA was the cheapest by a few hundred quid compared to even a 1L Corsa.
This is with him having to use the driving app with Direct Line (no physical black box).

This was £1800 in November 2018, 80k miles, belt and clutch recently done. It’s been utterly brilliant for him,not the usual tin box,and was £880 to insure in his name. All his mates can’t understand how he got it.
has that been scrapped since? I put the reg into confused.com to get an idea of insurance prices for my daughter and it can't find the details?

What spec is it out of interest, £880 for a new driver is crazy low insurance
My daughter found the mk4 golf tdi match se we bought her to be much cheaper to insurers than the usual starter cars. It was a much higher group than others but that's apparently not the only way they work things out. I was much happier with her in a solid, bigger car than smaller cars for similar outlay.

Amazed no one has mentioned a Mini, ours got a First model, it’s a 1.6 but only has 74hp & insurance was about £800.
Yep.

My folks' are going down to one car, so I've convinced my old man to give my daughter his 07/57 Cooper.

I ran some quotes as if she's 17 already and it was £950 without a black box.

A One, which I figured was what I'd be buying her before this option presented itself, was only £100 less.

Mind you, I can trust her with 120bhp of MINI. Not sure I'll feel the same about her brother when he turns 17 - I've seen him in a kart!

Do you expect service and maintenance to be higher than the likes of Fiestas etc.? They're effectively a BMW but maybe things like brakes aren't so much more for an older model away from a main dealer?

And how have you been getting on with the insurance for a 17 year old?
