Anything petrol with an MOT, not going to search as I do this frequently and there is lots about in my £1500 filter, doesn't matter what it is, just go on condition and gut feeling, part of the fun.

As everyone else suggests and i’d be tempted to get something hilarious that I wouldn’t normally consider if its only for a short period….

You need to contact bearman off the old shed thread, he hires out old sheds for not much more than a weekly shop.
Trouble is he won't like the reply as he wants a merc .

Just buy a focus/mondeo petrol for as near to a grand as possible flog it after the 4 months is up and i bet you wouldn't of lost much .

Like most people he just wanted validation for the choice he had already made, he didn't really want to hear other people's opinions.

I think it is an excellent idea to go and buy and old CLK or SLK for £2K.

So according to the popular YouTube traders, a 1.0 107/C1/Aygo is all you need - cheap and reliable!

Or, a petrol Civic. Or a Suzuki Swift.

What about lexus is220d quite a few on budget and I would have more faith in them being reliable at this age than the German brands.

Just to add some balance regarding 'old cheap Mercedes cars'

I am a serial old cheap Mercedes buyer of the last 15 years and i have bought from W201 190d to W140 CL420 and many others in between.

ALL bar one of them have been reliable*, i have covered 10'000s of miles in these older cars. Not to say that bits have not had to be replaced, they were old cars but nothing catastrophic and nothing eye wateringly expensive.

I usually buy private and the last 3 have been:

2001 W208 CLK Convertible 115,000miles
Bought late last year for £2000, good money but lovely condition (especially for one of these), last owner of @16 years had taken the car with him to Europe before coming back to the UK and really looked after it. Full history, all paperwork and, needed no money spending on it. Looking forward to the summer with this one.

2001 SLK 200 @90,000 miles
Bought late 2020 for £1000 in good condition (no rusty arches, roof all working) looked after by owner of the previous 6 years, lots of history. Few little things needed tidying, wheels, scratched bumper etc all easy fixes. Sadly written off after hitting motorway debris, insurance paid out @ £2500!

2007 CLK 220 CDI SPORT @199'000miles!
Bought late 2019 for £1500 full history and really good condition overall but obvious exterior nicks/stone chips etc from high mileage. Brother now has this one.

These three cars were just buy, jump in and drive. No fuss no bother.

  • Bought a W211 E Class 320 diesel for £1200 was going to need @ £300 or £600 for a repair so quickly sold on for £850 with declared fault. you can't win them all. smile

You can have my 2006 MX5 1.8 for 2k smile (Subject to it passing its MOT on 9th May)

Fun little car to drive, not the fastest thing in the world, but roof drops quickly and cheap to insure

Using Motorway - the Honda came back as 871, and the merc 1376.

So now you know the Honda would cost £450 more, all else being equal. Maybe find something like a basic petrol manual Ford Focus for £2500 privately and maybe Motorway's offer would be higher than the Merc.

If the OP wants to take a punt on a £2500 Merc, and can afford to walk away if it goes wrong, nothing wrong with doing that.

So long as you can afford the price of something sensible if the need arises.

You could pay £25k for a Merc and lose £2500 in a week or two and nobody would criticise you.

Keep us updated on what you end up with OP!
I think it’s a great idea and there is plenty about, my cousin did it when visiting from Australia for 6months but ended up in a £500 Rover 200 that he scrapped for £80.
I need to pick up a car by September for a road trip to Germany so if you end up with a half decent Merc or Jag I might be interested in taking it off your hands for a fair price.
